Condolence From: Ann Cook
Condolence: I just had a dream about Gerry last night which led me to look up this site again this morning. In the dream, he was at sea with me and we were exploring! I just wanted the family to know that we all still think (and dream) of him. - Ann Cook, former grad student/postdoc in the Borehole Research Group

Condolence: Sorry to hear (just now when reading a newsletter!) of Gerry's passing. I never sailed or worked directly with him, but always enjoyed running into him at meetings and workshops. We often discussed mutual interests and tentative plans to do something together. I would have liked to have gotten to know him better! Nick (UT Austin)

Condolence: I met Gerry playing sports. He was a great athlete, and a generous, happy soul on the court. We worked together on some tough issues at work, and he was as honest and open-minded a colleague as you could ask for. I was growing increasingly attached to Gerry, discovering a bright, good-hearted man of profound integrity. I miss him very much. We are all diminished by his passing.

Condolence From: Marc Reichow
Condolence: I am deeply saddened and shocked about this tragic news. I sailed with Gerry on my first IODP cruise where he taught me the several skills you need as a logging scientist in 2005. I liked his straight talking and sense of humour and never forget the time we sat together in Panama over a nice drink talking about life, his family he hugely loved and of course IODP. We met again after a very long time at AGU last year. I was so pleased to see him. Gerry you’ll be hugely missed! I wish the family all the strength to get through this very difficult time. My thoughts are with you. Love from Marc Reichow x

Condolence: You left us way too soon my friend. I had real hopes that we might work together off the Jersey coast this summer. And I never stopped thinking about that sailing and scuba trip with the pilot whales we said we'd do one day. We've been in some pretty tight spots together, from several hundred feet below ground in Indiana to freezing at 13,000+ in Colorado. And we had some great times in the rock torture lab. But what I remember most is just laughing. Laughing our butts off. We did more of that than anything. And you used to get so mad when I called you "Geraldo". Being on opposite coasts, we didn't get together as much as I would have liked, but when we did, it was like no time had passed. Same old Gerry, telling stories with gusto and woe to anyone standing too close. I am so glad we got to see you in 2012, to meet all of your childhood friends (which explained a lot), and most of all, to finally meet your beautiful daughter Sierra. I will miss you very much Gerry, there is a hole in my soul that will never completely mend. DeeDee and Sierra, my deepest condolences to you both.

Condolence: Spending time with Gerry Iturrino was a gift. He was full of joy, creative energy, and enthusiasm for life. I recall one expedition on Atlantis in 1990 in particular. Gerry and I and Guy Cochrane were running an experimental measurement program that did not work out well, mostly because the seafloor was hard and crusty and the core barrels holding our instruments kept bending during deployment. We spent many hours in the lab rigging the gear, only to have to strip it back down at the end of a shift. On several occasions we ended up in the mess at 2 or 3 am, and it seemed like for three or four nights in a row, the ship's video system was showing a truly awful movie called, Killer Klowns from Outer Space. I remember that we were watching that movie and laughing so hard one night we were practically weeping, and then we repeated lines from the movie in following days, trying to get each other to crack up. I think that one of the best lines was when the small town sheriff confronted the alien clowns who were swarming menacingly around him, and he drawled kind of slowly, "So, what 'cha planning to do with those pies, boys?" We did not get much data, but it was a great cruise, especially because that was when I first got to know Gerry well. It was always great to see Gerry at meetings, catch up on events, and share stories about our families. I am sure going to miss him. I send my sympathies and good wishes to Gerry's family and many friends.

Condolence: Gerardo, you will always live my memories my brother! I can't forget your laugh, your smile and the happiness you brought with you everywhere. Your noble and loving spirit will surely be missed. It is so many times we take things for granted till death steals one more wonderful being from us, but I'm sure you are at total healing and peace. Glad to hear you lived a very full life! A big hug to all your family, specially your beautiful daugther, sister, mom and Deedee.

Condolence From: Keir Becker
Condolence: It is with great sadness that we in the Division of Marine Geology and Geophysics at the University of Miami – RSMAS learned of the untimely passing of Gerry Iturrino. As his dissertation advisor, I fondly remember Gerry as one of my favorite graduate students and a valued colleague after he moved to the Borehole Research Group at LDEO. I first worked with Gerry during ODP Leg 118 in 1987, when he was finishing his MS studies at Purdue, and I was very excited when he chose to pursue his PhD at RSMAS. In his five years here, he proved himself to be an excellent student – intelligent, resourceful, hard-working, and very personable. He did everything an advisor could ask of a student, and always with good humor and style. This included going to sea on independent projects - and smuggling equipment in his luggage to my colleagues across international borders! We simply gave him opportunities that he seized with great enthusiasm, and his resourcefulness, work ethic, and sense of humor carried through his subsequent professional life. It was a great pleasure to have sailed with him several times since he moved on from RSMAS, most recently in May 2013. I am just one of many shipmates who will sorely miss Gerry – but will always remember him fondly. Our heartfelt condolences go to Gerry’s beloved family, especially Diane and Sierra. Keir Becker, Gerry’s PhD advisor, 1990-1995

Condolence: I, too, am heartbroken and filled with fond memories of Gerry. We met at UM and, with a band of brothers and sisters (hello Jayson!), shared the victories and challenges of earning PhDs. With Gerry the RSMAS moments were always good. He was a great shipmate on the JOIDES Resolution as well.. We still have the styrofoam cups we decorated and sent to shrink at the seafloor before Gerry's and Dee Dee's wedding. I remember a smart, fun, caring and kind friend who also had the most beautiful eyelashes! Sail on, Gerry. Missing you. Condolences to Dee Dee, Sierra, family, friends and colleagues. Henny (Keir and Maya as well).

Condolence: I am heartbroken and deeply saddened to find out that my mate, “El Mojon”, has passed away at such a young age. He was always so positive, a real cool cat, super intelligent, so fun to be around and such a handsome guy. I even tried setting him up with my friend Janet from UM at a pub in Coconut Grove, but he could not find the place and did not show up, so Janet and I ended up connecting that night and later got married!! After meeting Gerry, Janet admitted that she would have totally gone for him had he shown up… He later married Dee Dee from UM, and I thought she was a wonderful choice. That is my famous story about Gerry that has been told many times and will continue. Janet and I also remember our tradition of Gerry and I bailing from RSAMAS for Friday afternoon for nachos, margaritas and B grade videos, and will never forget cutting up fallen trees with chainsaws after Hurricane Andrew like macho men. We did not see much of each other when I moved to Australia, but kept in touch by email. I am glad that we briefly caught up less than 2 years ago when my family visited NY from Perth Australia. All he could talk about was his lovely daughter Sierra – the beaming smile on his face talking about her was infectious. It was so great to connect again, we talked about him and Sierra planning a holiday down under, we hoped for more good times, but God had different plans. So this is my hug goodbye to you, missing you tons and love you always bro!!!! Jayson. Dee Dee, here’s my email, please contact me: jayson_meyers@hotmail.com

Condolence: Quite a few years ago I stopped by Nyack to visit my daughter Diana and Gerry, and was the week of my birthday. Anyway Gerry called before coming home from work and said he had 3 tickets to the Yankees and Oakland A's playoff game, and be ready to leave when he got home. The A's were Gerry's favorite team and the 3 of us had a great time at the ballgame. I had never been to Yankee Stadium and thought this was one of the best birthday presents ever. To top that off we three went to Cooperstown NY to the Baseball Hall of Fame that next weekend. My first time there also. Was quite thoughtful of my son-in-law to help celebrate my birthday. Thanks Gerry for a week I'll never forget. We both loved sports, and that was in our conversations many times. Gerry was a loving and adoring father, and a great gentleman. I consider it an honor to have been his father-in-law, and friend. Fair winds and following seas ole mate.
