Obituary for Theresa Leone

Theresa M. Leone, educator and world traveler, passed from this life on Monday, November 21, 2016. Terry was the first in her family born in America, on March 30, 1921, in Nyack, NY, to Joseph Leone and Mary Margaret Leone (Mahalic). She is survived by her sister, Marie Voorhis, her sister-in-law, Anne Leone and many nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her brother, Anthony J. (Bill) Leone and her brother-in-law, Harold Voorhis.
Terry attended St. Ann’s School and graduated from Nyack High School, with honors, in 1939.
Terry was a member of the first female class at Fordham University where she received a degree in Social Studies and Education. She went on to get a Master’s Degree in Guidance and Education at Fordham.
Her career began at Congers High School. She taught briefly in Idaho, returning to NY to take a position at Sewanhaka High School on Long Island.
Terry worked at Nyack High School from September 1965-June 1979. She started at Nyack as a Guidance Counselor and became Chairperson of Guidance in January 1970.
In her oft time, Terry traveled the world. She visited China, Russia, Japan, Australia and many countries in Europe.
By far, Terry’s greatest passion and joy was working with students, helping them find their passion and realizing their dreams.
Visiting hours will be at Hanneman’s Funeral Home, Nyack, NY on Sunday, November 27, 2016, 3-6 pm. A mass of Christian burial will be at St. Ann’s Church, Nyack, NY, Monday, November 28, 2016 at 10:00 am. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Ann’s Church, Nyack, NY.
