Obituary for Karen A. Emden

Karen A.  Emden
Karen Anne (Gallucci) Emden, Esq., 69, of Palm Coast, FL, passed away February 2, 2017, at Florida Hospital: Flagler.



Karen was born in Pearl River, NY, on March 8, 1947, to the late Judge John Anthony Gallucci and Helen Roxane Rafter. The oldest of four children, Karen grew up in Piermont, NY and graduated from Tappan Zee High School in 1965. In 1973, she graduated with academic distinction of Phi Beta Kappa with a Bachelor of Arts degree from the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, VA. Karen received her Juris Doctor degree from the Marshall-Wythe School of Law at the College of William and Mary in 1976, later receiving an Advanced Certificate in Education in 1978 also from William and Mary.



Karen was an attorney-at-law and professor of Business Administration at the College of William and Mary having the distinction of being the first full-time female professor in the Business School. Her published works include an article in the Albany Law Review “Intermediate Tier Analysis of Sex Discrimination Cases: Legal Perpetuation of Traditional Myths”, 43 ALB. L. Rev. 73 (1978). Professional association officer positions included 1st Vice President (1980) and Secretary-Treasurer (1978) of the Mid-Atlantic Region of the American Business Law Association. She was also a member of the Virginia and Vermont Bar Associations. Towards the end of her professional career, she was a practicing attorney in Colchester, VT.



Karen was a wonderful, loving, hardworking, and multi-talented woman who enjoyed world travel, having visited countries across 6 continents. She was an avid quilter and cook and her family eagerly awaited her epicurean delights during holiday seasons. She loved the New York Giants and the New York Yankees and spending time with her children and grandchildren. Throughout her lifetime she lived in St. Louis, MO; Williamsburg, VA; Redding, CT; Hong Kong; Colchester, VT; and most recently Palm Coast, FL.



Karen is survived by her daughter Patricia Jackson (and her husband Hans) of Derry, NH, and her three sons, Willard Francis Emden, III (and his wife Michelle) of Palm Coast, FL; Christopher John Emden (and his wife Elizabeth) of Palm Harbor, FL; and Kevin Michael Emden (and his fiancée Sarah Gibson) of Pittsford, NY. Grandchildren include Erin and Connor Jackson, Marissa, Lily, and Bridget Emden, and Noelle and Natalie Emden. She is also survived by two sisters, Roxane Lamont of Tinton Falls, NJ, and Lorraine Gallucci of NYC, and a brother, John A. Gallucci, Jr., Esq. of Piermont, NY.

Visiting hours are 4:00 to 6:00 p.m., Thursday, February 16, 2017, at Hanneman Funeral Home, 88 South Broadway, Nyack, NY 10960. A Mass of Christian burial is at 10:00 a.m. Friday, February 17, 2017, at St. John the Baptist Roman Catholic Church, 898 Piermont Ave, Piermont, NY 10968 with the Rev. Tom Kunnel officiating. Interment is immediately following at Rockland Cemetery, 201 Kings Highway, Sparkill, NY 10976.
