Obituary for Susan Elizabeth Mahoney

Susan Elizabeth Mahoney
Susan Elizabeth O’Connell Mahoney passed away peacefully at home on June 1, 2017 holding her husband’s hand and surrounded by her family. She was born in Poughkeepsie on April 17, 1926 to Nancy Reed O’Connell and Edward O’Connell. She is predeceased by her parents and her brothers Dan and Ned and her sister Mary Ann. She attended Teacher’s College in Albany and later served as secretary to the Dean of Vassar College. She married Thomas Francis Mahoney on April 30, 1949 at Saint Mary’s Church in Poughkeepsie. After living in Levittown and Putnam Valley, Sue and Tom settled in Nyack where Sue taught for 17 years at Saint Ann’s School. She was always thrilled to meet a former student—many of whom recognized her well in to her 80’s! After 32 years in Nyack, Sue and Tom moved to Airmont, where they lived for 22 years. Sue was an amazing gardener as well as a talented artist, art lover, knitter, and avid reader.
Sue is survived by her loving husband of 68 years, Thomas Francis Mahoney. She was mother to Nancy, Kathy, Maureen, Tom, Dan, Ellen (predeceased) Kevin, and Megan; mother-in-law to Todd, Bruce, Sharon, Kris, Betty, and Arthur; Grammy to Susan, Patrick, Jeffrey, Katie, Kristin, Keith, Scott, James, Brendan, Shannon, Tommy, Daniel, Brendan, Caitlin, Matthew (predeceased), Christopher, Bridget, Michael, Mary, Megan, and Madison (predeceased). She was Great-Grammy or “Gigi” to 20 great-grandchildren (with one more on the way!)
She is at peace.
Friends may visit at Hannemann Funeral Home on Monday, June 5 from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m.
Mass of Christian Burial: Tuesday June 6 10:00 a.m. Saint Ann’s Church Nyack, NY.
