Obituary for Charlotte M. Eubanks Stokes

Charlotte M. Eubanks Stokes
Charlotte Mae Eubanks Stokes made her transition from this earthly life on Monday morning August 21, 2017 after a valiant effort against cancer. Charlotte was born on February 23, 1947 in Nyack, NY. She was the third daughter of Charles Allen Eubanks, Jr. and Gertha Celestine Taylor Eubanks; and the first child born to them following their relocation to New York from their Durham, NC origins. At eighteen months of age Charlotte fell from a second floor window sustaining only a gash in her tongue. That incident helped to shape her indomitable spirit and her enthusiasm to live life to its fullest potential. She knew, understood and pursued the “Audacity of Hope” from her early childhood. She was a very sagacious, articulate, vibrant, and generous woman—a fierce competitor at all times and a champion to many friends and acquaintances.
A 1965 graduate of Nyack High School, she received her Bachelor of Science degree in History from North Carolina Agricultural and Technical University (A&T), Greensboro in 1969. She earned her Master’s from the University of Chicago in 1971. Thereafter, she began her stellar career in education in Evanston, IL. Most passionate regarding her profession, Charlotte continued her teaching career in the Fairfax County, VA school system until her appointment as Social Studies Coordinator for Prince Georges’ County Public Schools retiring in 2012. She set high standards for herself as well as her students. She possessed strict values and an assertiveness that was no nonsense. She would not tolerate poor performance due to laziness. She was innovative in her mindset and her approach to the challenges of providing compulsory education objectively focused to engage and empower youth with the philosophy that the future depends on the equation of what is taught, and that failure is reflective and the responsibility of teachers who must themselves be creative educators.
Charlotte was family centered and motivated. She was devoted to her husband, Gerald V Stokes who she married in July, 1972, and to her sons: Gordon Kenneth Stokes (Rebekah Rose) and Garrett Keith Stokes, and her dearly cherished granddaughter Vivian Rose. The Stokes family resided in Boulder, CO, Nashville, TN and Arlington, VA before settling in Alexandria, VA in 1978.
Charlotte’s interests and enjoyments were many and varied from her being a serious football and basketball fan; an avid book enthusiast; lover of good films and all genres of music, to being a meticulous housekeeper, baker of sweet potato pies and demonstrating a variety of culinary skills. Ever a loquacious talker, Charlotte could converse with people from all backgrounds and ideologies. She was always willing to give the best of talents in whatever she could contribute. She was honored to be the speaker for the fiftieth anniversary of her class during the commencement ceremonies for Nyack High School class of 2015.She was a vocal and active participant in the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s and she remained politically astute throughout her life. She was extremely proud to have served on the Democratic National Committee for the election and re-election of Barak Obama.
She was an ardent member of St. John’s Baptist Church where she served as an usher, editor for the church newsletter, member of the Winter Season Committee, manager of the bulletin board, and Vacation Bible School. She was also much appreciated for occasions wherein she shared her famous five flavor pound cake.
Charlotte is survived by her husband and sons, her granddaughter, her mother, Gertha Eubanks, her sisters: Lady Stephens, Patricia Eubanks and Lynnette Marshall (James); her brothers: Robert Eubanks, and Charles Eubanks (Sandra), four nephews, three nieces, two great nieces, three great nephews, and many special cousins and loyal friends. She will be remembered and missed by all who knew her.
Donations in her memory may be made to: Pancreatic Cancer Action Center/www.pancan.org.
