Obituary for June Sundvik

June Sundvik
June Irene Sundvik
July 23, 1929 – February 11, 2018

June Sundvik passed into life eternal during the early morning hours of February 11, 2018. June was born on Old Mill Road in Valley Cottage New York, the third daughter of Clara Anderson and Gustaf Svahn. She was well loved by all who knew her. June had a passion for the arts, especially handweaving, and was a well-known weaver and teacher of weaving, beginning her craft at the age of sixteen in Sweden. In recent years her artistic interests brought her to water color and pastel painting, and her pieces were displayed locally at the Valley Cottage Library. She was an active member of the local Vasa Lodge, where she served as cultural advisor. She also had a passion for flowers and gardening and was a member of the Forest Glen Garden Club. Her interests took her on trips to the South of France, Scotland, Ireland, and Scandanavia, where she absorbed the culture and flavor of the people and the arts and weavers she encountered. June was one of the founding members of the Palisades Weavers guild and remained active with that group throughout its existence. She also taught for a time at Manhattan College and her work was featured at Bloomingdales and in the pages of Mademoiselle.

She recently completed a long term project to capture the spirit and history of the road she grew up on and the people she grew up with, in a book of memoirs entitled “Life on Old Mill Road” which she published last year and which has received local notice for how it brings back such great memories of times recently gone by and a simpler life, as well as providing for all of us a continual reminder of her ever present need to share stories about the place she loved and lived in, Valley Cottage, for 86 of her 88 active and caring years. She will be greatly missed and fondly remembered.

June is survived by her sons Michael Garr (Jeanne) and Carl Sundvik (Gina), and son in law William Trotter. She was the proud grandmother of Albert, Daniel, and Ryan Garr; William, John, and Eric Trotter; Lindsey, Emma, and Trevor Sundvik; and 3 great grandchildren, Ellie and Clare Trotter, and Abigail Garr. June was predeceased by her husbands Stanton Garr and Reino Sundvik as well as her daughter Karen Trotter. She also leaves her sisters Stina Ferguson of Cape May and Alphild Boardman, of Colorado Springs, who have been inseparable throughout their lives.

A memorial service will be held at the Clarkstown Reformed Church (107 Strawtown Rd, West Nyack, N.Y.) on Saturday March 3, 2018 at 12:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to the Valley Cottage Library, 110 Rte. 303, Valley Cottage, N.Y. 10989.
