Ed was born in Oswego NY during the Depression. He developed a strong work ethic from the time he was a young boy, picking onions outside of the city of Oswego, to help feed his family.
His father, Edmund Sr. was a career army man and moved the family to Japan for several years following World War II. This is where Ed attended high school and developed a lifelong interest in Asian culture.
Ed Matott was a natural athlete, excelling at any sport he played. Of all the diverse sports he played, however, baseball was his passion. He was a “Lefty” pitcher and played semi-pro ball.
Ed served in the army during the Korean War. During his time in the army he was a fire arms instructor as well as working in the encryption and decoding units. His fondest memories of his time in the army were from serving in the same unit as his father.
After the war, Ed attended SUNY Oswego on the GI Bill. He was awarded several scholarships and grants to continue his education. Ed earned Master’s degrees from Columbia University, SUNY New Paltz and New York University. He spoke fluent Mandarin and spent time living and studying in Hong Kong and Taiwan.
Ed married Aileen O’Leary in 1955 and they had four children. He worked hard to support his family. He was a teacher, a coach, a soccer official, tennis instructor and a lifeguard.
Ed Matott loved living in the Lower Hudson valley. He loved being an active member of the Nyack community and contributed to the community in numerous ways, including setting up and running summer basketball leagues for his beloved high school players.
Ed Matott was a fierce, brave, passionate man who will be greatly missed.
