I recently learned of Gerry's passing, reading the news in the Purdue College of Science magazine We were both graduate students at Purdue. He was in Dr. christiansen's lab and I was next door in Dr. Zinsmeister's lab. Gerry was a fun person and always had time to talk. Those great memories for me are frozen in time and I am saddened. He definitely made the world a better place. My condolences to his family.

You will always be in my heart as the good student and human being you were. I'm still in shock about the news of your departing to eternal life, but you are now in better place. May God receive you in His kingdom, embrace you, and forever let you rest in peace. You will be in my prayers. You left us but will never be forgotten.

ELEGY for a GEOLOGIST/In memory of Gerry Iturrino//If I had known/it was our last beer,/I would have sipped/it slowly.//If I had known/it was the last story/I would hear/from your beard,/I would have asked more questions.//And your eyes would grow wide/beneath their bushy brows,/and your hands would open a space/for antic gesticulation/which you would punctuate/with cartoon onomatopoeia/animating a scene/in a far-away place/I will never see.//But our past unfurls behind us,/folding down into the earth/with such finality,/and all we can do/is drill down deep,/unearthing a core from the depths/layered with strata of memory.

Gerry's achievements in life were not only scientific. I think his greatest accomplishment was helping to create and raise an amazing daughter, Sierra, with his (also amazing) wife, Diana. What a splendid legacy!

Despite not keeping in touch regularly, I have vivid memories of the kindness and sincerity with which Gerry led his life. A diplomat, a sounding board, a mentor, and example of everything it means to be a good person. Such a great smile, bright eyes that matched his sentiments, and so many fun times. I used to tease him about how proud Puerto Ricans are of their stash, and if he'd every consider shaving it... we had some fun laughs about that soup-strainer of his... Among my fondest memories was the RSMAS new student party of 1992 when I first entered MGG... boy, even more memorable was its aftermath... Gerry and Jason and a few others consumed nearly every drop of tequila the bar had. Needless to say, we were in a very bad way the next day, with Jason found in the seismic trailer sleeping on a table... and Gerry looking like he'd just gone through the spin-cycle of a washer... Upon hearing of his passing, so many memories of great times came back. Always so kind and sweet, always so helpful, essentially helping out any new grad student when things got overwhelming. I am so heartbroken over his loss; even more when I think of the suffering his family and close friends must be enduring in these trying times. Thanks Gerry for everything, the support when I was a freaked-out newbie in MGG, the many laughs and smiles, the positive approach to some of the most challenging and sometimes discouraging twists life has. But over all of that, I remember the warmth of the simple decency you embodied. I am heartbroken by all of this and I wish his family strength and peace and much love.

I sailed on the JOIDES Resolution with Gerry in '96/'97--so those trips must have been some of the first for both of us. No matter how long the Leg had been wearing on, Gerry never seemed to lose any enthusiasm or positivity. He could always be counted on to lift your spirits. He will be missed.

For many years Gerry had an office across the hall from mine. He left the door open and I heard his voice all the time. He was always busy and speaking to someone, either on the phone or in person. He sounded particularly passionate when he spoke in Spanish to family and friends. Some people would have been bothered by the talking, but I enjoyed it, it was truly the soundtrack of my day. Eventually I moved into his office and my days became very quiet. I missed the company of his laughter and the mischievous smirks when he stopped by my office. I will miss them even more now.

I attended a funeral last year in which the deceased’s daughter-in-law delivered a poignant eulogy for her husband’s father. In it she urged the audience to “pass him on.” By this she meant that the best way to remember someone is to engage in the behaviors defined by his most positive character traits and to serve as an example for others to do so as well. I thought it was a lovely sentiment. Gerry had a big personality; he was no glass of milk. This energy was fueled by several convictions. First of all, he was conscientious. I saw this both as a colleague and a friend. If you collaborated with him on a workplace project, he quietly—although sometimes not so quietly—took care of his business and was always there to help you take care of yours if you needed him. He was conscientious as a father; it was evident to anyone who knew him at all how driven he was by his love for his daughter Sierra. As a supervisor at different times to our group’s scientists and engineers, he habitually went out of his way to put people in positions that could further their career aspirations. He also went out of his way to be socially inclusive with other employees he otherwise had little reason to interact with. And as a friend he was always ready to drop everything to help you out with whatever you might need, whether it was an ear to bounce a thought off or a ride to the airport. Actually, all of this was probably more than conscientiousness—it was deep generosity. For years, Gerry and I had an informal arrangement in which we helped each other out with airport rides for our personal traveling. Even though he probably drove me back and forth more than I drove him, he couldn’t help but want to do something extra for me on the occasions when I was the chauffer. He just had to take me out for dinner or a drink, or help me move something heavy in my apartment, or give me gifts. One time I picked him up after a vacation he took in California, during which he attended a baseball game between the Giants (the team I follow) and the Oakland A’s (his team). As soon as he got in my car, he pulled out a bag of goodies that he had bought for me during the game: a Giants cap, a t-shirt, some plastic mugs. This may not sound like a big deal, but if you only knew how much he loathed the Giants, you could understand the generosity of spirit behind this gesture. It was quintessential Gerry. Finally, Gerry was ethical. He had a strong sense of right and wrong. He wasn’t preachy about it; it wasn’t something he jammed down your throat, but it snuck up on you. If you were having a discussion with him about current events or sports figures or academic politics, it quickly became apparent that he had a formidable moral compass. He admired character. I think this was a powerful motivator for him in his work and life. So if you want to honor Gerardo and do justice to his memory, reach out to the shy person in the office or at a party. Be generous with other people. Help advance a colleague’s career. Always put your daughter first. Take your friend to dinner. Pass him on.

Gerry, 20 years go fast. I remember the Gulf of Mexico and offshore New Jersey. I remember 72 hour logging stints when you never lost your good humor or your patience with me. I remember the glow in your eyes as you talked of your daughter. You loved to live every day and I am going to miss that most of all. Sail onward friend. Peter Flemings

I only got to have you in my life for ten months, but you enriched it in so many ways and I am so grateful for the time that we had together over the past year. I will always remember and cherish the look on your face when you came into the JOIDES Resolution science office in January. You looked so happy to see me and to be back on the ship one last time. I am so thankful that I got to be with you during your final journey on the JR. Sending you all my love from the ship you spent so much time on, and my strength and love to your family. I desperately wish I could be there in person, but know that I am with you and your friends and family in spirit. As you always told me, talk later…xoxoxoxo
