We were at sea when we received the devastating news that Gerry had passed away. Some of us were fortunate to have sailed with him on the transit from Subic Bay, Philippines to Hong Kong in January - his last voyage aboard the JOIDES Resolution and our last time to see him. Even for those who didn't know Gerry, it was clear from our outpouring of grief what a wonderful person he was and just how much he is missed by everyone at IODP. Sail on, Gerry.

I'll always remember nothing but happy times with Gerry. To this day one of my stepdaughters' favorite nicknames for me is "Gerardo" or, more frequently, "Gerardo Iturrino" (always with a ridiculous accent that sounds nothing like Gerry's did). Years ago I would tell them college stories from my days at Purdue. They loved the way "Gerardo Itturino" sounded, and they found it hilarious that I threw in the Puerto Rican pronunciation in the middle of a sentence. They started saying his name over & over, then starting calling me by his name. The more I told them that it was my friend's name not mine, the funnier they thought it was to call me that. Eventually it just stuck and I now I answer to "Gerardo Itturino" without blinking an eye. From now on though, whenever they call me that I'll smile to myself and remember what a great friend I had, even though I didn't have him nearly long enough.
