Obituary for Charles Fulton Oursler Jr.

Charles Fulton  Oursler Jr.
Fulton “Tony” Oursler, Jr, 84, of Nyack, NY, passed away September 18th, with his loving family at his bedside. A visitation will be held at Hanneman Funeral Home at 88 South Broadway, Nyack, NY. from 3-7 PM on Wednesday, September 21st. A mass to celebrate Fulton’s new life in Christ will be held at 11:00 am, Thursday, September 22 at Saint Ann’s Church, 16 Jefferson Street, Nyack, New York 10960.

Fulton was born at his family home in West Falmouth, Mass., on June 27th, 1932. In 1954, he graduated from Georgetown University where he met Noel Nevill. They married November 29th, 1954 and moved to Nyack where they resided for more 60 years.

He joined Reader’s Digest in 1956. In 1964, he completed his father’s unfinished auto-biography Behold This Dreamer. He retired from his position as executive editor in chief and vice president at Reader’s Di-gest in 1986. In 1992, he joined Guideposts Magazine as editor-in-chief. Fulton was instrumental in the founding Angels on Earth, a magazine devoted to first person stories about encounters with an-gels. During his career, Fulton worked with many writers including James Mitchner, Cornelius Ryan, Charles Lindbergh, and Edward J. Epstein. He was especially proud of his extensive work on “Roots” with Alex Haley.

Fulton loved the Hudson River, the English language and its proper use, words, baseball- especially the Red Sox, Ted Williams, the mu-sic of Charles Trenet, boxing, writing poetry, space travel, and read-ing. He was a faithful convert, a prankster, a master story-teller, a Cold-warrior, a patriot, a devoted father and husband.

He is survived by his wife, Noel Nevill Oursler of Nyack, NY, his daughters Theresa Oursler and Carroll Oursler Veltrop, and sons To-ny, Mark and James Oursler and many loving grandchildren and niec-es and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, Fulton Oursler, Sr, author of The Greatest Story Ever Told, and actress and author, Grace Perkins Oursler, and by his sister, April Oursler Arm-strong.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Marydell Faith and Life Center, 640 North Midland Avenue, Nyack, NY, 10960
