Obituary for David Jahnes

David Jahnes
David Lloyd Jahnes died unexpectedly on December 18, 2017, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Suffern, NY. He was born at Holy Name Hospital in Teaneck, NJ, on May 26, 1958, and was the second child of Vincent F. Jahnes and Cynthia A. Burgess. David grew up in Spring Valley, NY, with two brothers and many friends. David lived most of his adult life in Nyack, NY, where he was a volunteer fireman. He considered his fellow firefighters his second family.
David’s interest in being a fireman started at a very young age. His father was a volunteer fireman and whenever David heard a fire horn blow in town he would immediately run to listen to his father’s fire scanner. If fire trucks drove past the house he would run out to watch them. If a fire call was at a location within bicycling distance, he would ride there as if he were responding to the call.
David is survived by his loving daughter Nicole L. Alvernaz, her husband Junior M.G. Alvernaz, who David loved so much because Junior reminded him of himself, and their children Devin J. Alvernaz and Davie M. Alvernaz, who brought him so much joy. David always looked forward to traveling to Phoenix, AZ, to visit Nicole, Junior, and his grandchildren.
David also is survived by his older brother Donald E. Jahnes of Pearl River, NY, and his younger brother Christopher V. Jahnes of Upper Saddle River, NJ. Since childhood, the three Jahnes brothers lived close enough to each other to be able to drop by and visit at any time. They are and will always be loving brothers and best friends.
Last, but far from least, David is survived by his longtime love, Erika Klein, who he loved dearly and made him so happy.
A celebration of Dave’s life will be held on Thursday from 5 PM to 6 PM at the First Reformed Church of Nyack, 18 So. Broadway, Nyack, NY. A firematic service will take place at 6 PM at the church.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Dave’s memory may be made to the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation, P.O. Drawer 498, Emmitsburg, MD 21727.
