Dorothy Lane Mitchell

Dorothy Lane Mitchell, a longtime resident of Nyack, NY departed this life on January 17, 2018 at the age of 83.

She was born September 24, 1934 in Park Ridge, NJ to the late Helen Lane Smith and William Smith Sr. The family moved to Nyack where she completed her education and graduated from Nyack Public Schools. She married Elvin Mitchell Sr., the love of her life, and they raised eight children, over the course of their 60 plus year of marriage.

Dorothy wore many hats: wife, mother, sister, aunt, grandmother, great-grandmother, and Community Activist. In her early years she taught Sunday School and was an active member of the Quarterly and Annual Conferences while a member of St. Philips AME Zion Church. She was a tireless volunteer giving her time and services to many organizations including the Rockland Community Action Council, Camp Nyack, Nyack Recreation, assisting All Rockland Kids for Christ (ARK), the Democratic Committee, and an Inspector of Elections for many years. She also served on the Board of Head Start, was the Waldron Terrace Representative and a member of the Nyack Housing Authority for more than 20 years.

Dorothy is preceded in death by, her parents, William and Helen Smith, siblings: Charles, Percy, Roland, Thomas, William Jr., Mildred Bradley, Adeline Smith, Francis Smith, Jeanette Gordon, and Alberta Freeman.

She leaves to mourn her husband, Elvin Sr., 3 brothers, Donald, Harry and Andrew Smith, a sister, Evelyn Booker. Her brother in-law, Clyde Mitchell and sisters in-law, Mary Mitchell and Dale Smith, 8 children, Diane (Pierre Sr.) Davis of Valley Cottage, NY, Annette (Clifton Sr.) McMillan of Birmingham, AL, Lorraine (Calvin) Jones of Tampa, FL, Elvin (Sandra) Mitchell of Durham,, NC, Harriet (Reginald Sr.) Jemison of Nyack, NY, Allen (Jacqueline) Mitchell of New Orleans, LA, Michelle Mitchell of Durham, NC, and Paul (Nicole) Mitchell of Valley Cottage, NY. Her 16 grandchildren who will dearly miss her: Pierre Jr., Jared, Clifton Jr., Nicole, Jason, Elvin, Reginald Jr., Anthony, Paul, Angela, Jasmine, Amber, Marcus, Kevin, Malaya and Ayanna; Her great-grandchildren Mia, Trinity, Mariah and Jaden; Along with several nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends.

A wake will be held for Dorothy Mitchell at St. Philips AME Zion Church, 14 Mill Street, Nyack, NY 10960 on Thursday, January 25, 2018, between the hours of 4 pm - 8 pm.

A final hour of visitation on Friday, January 26, 2018, from 9 am - 10 am with a Homegoing Service at 10 am at St. Philips AME Zion Church.

Interment will follow at Brick Church Cemetery (Veterans Memorial) in Spring Valley, NY.
