Obituary for Virginia M. Smith

Virginia M. Smith, a life long resident of South Nyack, passed away on September 9, 2018. Virginia was the dear daughter of the late Dr. Thomas J. and Virginia Smith of South Nyack. Virginia was a graduate of Saint Ann's School in Nyack and Nyack High School. She was also a graduate of Lady Cliff College and earned Masters degrees from Hunter College. She was an elementary school teacher for almost 40 years. She taught at the American School in Germany as well as in the Tappan Zee and Clarkstown School Districts. She was a life long member of Saint Ann's Roman Catholic Church where she was a member of the Parish Council and St. Ann’s representative to the Rockland County Vicariate. She was also a member of Saint Ann's Rosary Society where she served as President, a member of the Catholic Daughters of America and an active member of the Historical Society of the Nyacks and the Rockland County Historical Society.

She is survived by her brother, Lieutenant Col. (Ret.) John J. and Mary Smith of Aiken, S.C., her sister, Mary Malone of Nyack, and sister in law, Marilyn Smith Burns. She was predeceased by her brother, Col. Thomas J. Smith, Jr. M.D. and sister, Cathleen A. Smith. She was the loved and loving aunt of 11 nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday at 10AM at Saint Ann's R.C. Church, 19 Jefferson Street in Nyack, with burial to follow at Rockland Cemetery in Sparkill. Visiting hours are scheduled for Thursday from 2-7PM at the Hannemann Funeral Home, Inc. in Nyack.
