Obituary for Richard Mathsen

Richard Mathsen, 69, of Nyack, NY departed this life on Friday, February 23, 2019 following a brief illness. Richard was born in Nyack, NY on February 13, 1950 to Nils and Mary Mathsen. A 1968 graduate of Nyack High School, Richard later received his degree from Albany State University.
Richard was married to his late wife, MaryAnn Mathsen, who predeceased him in 2015, on October 10, 1981 in Nyack. Richard is survived by his daughter Katie, his grandson Mason, and his mother in law Kay Ferrera all of Nyack; his brother Nils Mathsen of Airmont, NY, niece Marion and Richard Hawryluk and nephew Alan Mathsen. Richard is also survived by his brother in laws Richard Ferrera, his wife Anne, and nephews Nicholas, Paul and Mark of Macungie, PA; James Ferrera, his wife Regina, of Kentucky and nephews Bradley and Joseph.
Richard started working at Orange & Rockland Utilities after completing college. He retired in 2010 after 38 years. Rich was an active member of Orangetown Fire Co. #1 in South Nyack, NY. Richard held many titles while with the company from Captain to recording secretary, to commissioner of the department. He was instrumental in the formation of the Nyack Joint Fire District where he served on the first board of commissioners. Rich was president and an active member of the Orangetown Nyack Senior Citizens Club. As a native Nyacker Richard had many great friends in the community that he called home for 69 years.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday at 10 AM at St. Ann’s Roman Catholic Church, 16 Jefferson St., Nyack. The family will receive friends at the Hannemann Funeral Home, Inc. in Nyack on Tuesday from 4 PM to 8 PM. Orangetown Fire Co. #1 will hold a firematic service on Tuesday at 7 PM at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Richard’s memory to the Orangetown Fire Co. #1 and/or St. Ann’s RC Church.
