Schettig, Doris Mae
Doris Schechter Schettig of Valley Cottage NY died on April 8, 2019 at the age of 90. She passed away at her home surrounded by her loving family. Doris was born on March 24, 1929 to Matthew Schechter and Anne Howe Schechter in Brooklyn where her maternal grandmother Mary Anne Howe had brought her younger brothers and sisters from County Mayo Ireland for a better life in the USA. She is sister of the late June Alfieri and predeceased by her brother Daniel. Doris married Frederick “Buddy” Schettig on June 6, 1948 in the rectory at St. John's Church in Piermont NY. They were married for 67 years before Buddy's death on March 16th, 2016. Doris retired from Savings Bank of Rockland in 1988 and moved to Ocean View DE where she and Buddy enjoyed 27 years of retirement together. Doris is survived by her daughter Pam Schettig Butler, son Guy and wife Wendy. She is predeceased by her eldest son Scott and nephew Jerry. Doris had three grandchildren; Amy and husband Brian Diehl, Ryan, Liza and husband Sean McManus; and one great grandchild Mackenzie Diehl. Doris leaves behind eleven nieces and nephews and her longtime friends Margie Strohmeyer and Judy Andreas.
Doris loved and adored her grandchildren. She was an avid reader, and a fan of the New York Times Sunday crossword puzzle. She also loved to cook and entertain her family and friends. Doris was involved with the Democratic Club in Bethany Beach DE. While Doris found great joy in so many things, nothing compared to her love for Buddy. Their love was like eating soup with a fork. They couldn’t get enough.
