Obituary for Edward W. Peterson

Edward W.  Peterson
Edward W. Peterson was born in Yonkers, NY on May 6, 1925 to Joseph and Julia Peterson. He had two brothers, John and Joseph and three sisters Ellen, Miriam and Katherine all of whom predeceased him. As a youngster, he was an athlete participating in many sports especially track. He went on to coach track at Sacred heart High School in Yonkers, NY after WWII into the 1950's. He also served on the Recreation Board for the City of Yonkers as well as the Road Runners Club of NY and the AAU. He helped in the running of the Yonkers Marathon for many years. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1942 until 1945 aboard the USS Santee. During his service he earned many citations and awards, including a Purple Heart. He participated in and supported the American Legion and VFW. He worked for the U.S. Post Office and for the U.S. Customs Department as an inspector at Kennedy Airport.
In 1954, he married the love of his life Monica McGahran, she survives at home. They lived many years at Thorpe Village in Sparkill, NY. They had five children Sheila (Donald) Heimann of Decatur IL, Edward (Jeanne) of Highland NY, Richard (Nancy) Peterson of Pawling, NY, Mary Beth (Fedele) Vero of Blauvelt and Kerry Peterson Vezza of Pearl River, NY. Edward was adored by his twelve grandchildren and three great grandsons. The family would like to thank Ed's caregiver's at the Buckingham Nursing Home. Visiting will be held on Wednesday from 4 PM to 8 PM at the Hannemann Funeral Home, Inc. in Nyack. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday at 10 AM at the Sacred Heart Chapel in Sparkill, NY.
