Johnnie Ruth  Peaks
Johnnie Ruth Peaks 79, long time resident of Nanuet, NY, passed away peacefully at her home surrounded by her loved ones on Saturday, June 1, 2019. She was the only child born to Clarence and Savannah Steward on July 20, 1940 in Chattanooga, TN. She was lovingly reared by her aunt Carrie Dell Johns in Anniston, Al. Graduated from Cobb Ave. High School in Anniston and Alabama A & M College, in Huntsville, Al. In 1962 she moved to NY and completed her education at Hunter College and New York University.
Predeceased by her parents, her devoted husband Joseph Peaks, step son Dwayne Peaks and Aunt Carrie Dell Johns.
In the early 1970’s Johnnie joined First Baptist Church, a faithful, active member for many years until she became disabled. Johnnie was past President of the Educational and Cultural Enrichment Center for many years; a tutor in the Project Pride, and teacher in Vacation Bible School.
Her career in teaching extended over 30 years in the East Ramapo School District as Business Teacher and Dean. She was also an instructor for Rockland Community college and for many years ran the summer Youth Program for Spring Valley under the Rockland County Youth Bureau.
For more than 60 years she was a dedicated member of Delta sigma Theta sorority, Inc. a Chartered member affiliated with Rockland County Alumnae Chapter.
Johnnie was an expert seamstress and was affectionately called “the fashion queen” always in beautiful colors matching from head to toe. In her spare time she enjoyed shopping and playing a highly competitive game of bid whist.
She is survived by her loving honorary mother, Barbara S. Williams, Nyack, NY, Nieces, Candis T. Williams, Charlene Williams and Carole, Agard of Airmont, NY, step-son Darryl Peaks, granddaughter, Lindsey, grandson, Demetrius and three greatgrandchildren; sister in-law Annie Peaks, Columbus, OH and a host of wonderful nieces, nephews cousins and loving friends.
