Obituary for Ruth E. Askew

Ruth E.  Askew
Ruth E. Pleasant was born 2/23/1930 to Doris and Willie James Pleasant in Suffolk, Virginia. At 16 yrs. of age, Ruth married George J. Askew, Sr. of Norfolk, Virginia who has been deceased since 1990.
At the time they married, George Sr. was serving in the United States Army and was stationed at Ft. Dix New Jersey. While George was stationed at Ft. Dix Ruth re-located to New York City with his family. After a 6 month stay with George’s family, they moved to Nyack, New York. The first residence was the corner of Brookside Avenue and Franklin Street. Then a move to Jackson Ave. When they needed more space with 2 children they moved to Main Street behind Barron’s furniture store. The next move was to 150 Depew Ave.
Ruth went to work at Rockland State Hospital in 1962, where she worked as a therapy aide taking care of many. She retired from Rockland in 1985. She moved several times more finally ending up in Warwick, New York. She was a good homemaker, loved music and dancing. Enjoyed the companionship of her best friend Garrye. They enjoyed traveling together and visiting local casinos. Ruth enjoyed playing Bingo with friends. Ruth was a loving mother of five who persisted to fulfill her duties in that role till her last breath.
Ruth is survived by her first born, Alvin Askew, (Los Angeles, California), Barbara Hall Coleman (Baltimore, Maryland), George Askew Jr. (Newport News, Virginia), Doris Chambers (Warwick, New York) and Larry Askew (Los Angeles, California).
She is also survived by her loving grandchildren, Lisa Marie Bailey (Irving, Texas), Tamika Shakur (Middletown, New York), George E. Porscha (Boston, Massachusetts), Stanis K. Askew (Redlands, California) Rahim Miller (Los Angeles, California), David M. Hall (Mission Viejo, California), David Miller (Los Angeles, California), Travis Hall, (San Diego, California). She is also a great great grandmother.
Ruth will never be forgotten and always will be missed.
