Terrence M. McCabe
Obituary

Terrence M. McCabe died peacefully, surrounded by love, on August 14, 2019.

Terrence was born in Bronx, New York on June 11, 1935, to Terence and Anna (née Mannion) McCabe. Terry attended Saint Simon Stock School, received his Bachelor’s degree in Economics from Iona College and a Law degree from New York Law School.

Terrence married his beloved wife Anna “Nancy” (née Whelan) in 1957. The couple moved to New City, New York in 1967 where they raised their five children. The couple built their dream house on the Hudson River in 1987, later moving to Nyack in 1999 and Terrence ultimately settled in Piermont, NY and Brick, NJ.

Terrence practiced law for nearly 50 years under the partnership of Blauman and McCabe LLC. In 1985, Terrence was admitted to practice before the United States Supreme Court as a member of its bar. He also owned an insurance agency, Tremont Insurance Brokers, in which he worked with his wife Nancy for over 25 years.

Terrence was a devoted son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and friend. He was a lifelong learner, who was enthusiastic about many subjects including history, politics, sports, law and justice. He loved to travel, share wonderful meals and adventures with family and friends. He was a lifelong athlete, an avid runner, he was a highly competitive basketball player who loved nothing more than sharing the game with his children and grandchildren. He was a devoted Boston Red Sox fan, who did not see a World Series win until he was 69 years old and proudly attended game 6 of the World Series in 2015, to watch the Sox claim victory.

Terrence was an inspiration to all who new him. His grace and resilience in the wake of illness and injury was astounding. Terrence and his family are tremendously grateful to the doctors and staff at Helen Hayes Rehabilitation Hospital for seeing the man behind the illness and enabling Terry to regain his mobility and strength. Up until the last month of his life, he would say how he loved to go there to “work out”.

Terrence was pre-deceased in life by his beloved wife Anna, his parents, his dear sister Ann Morgan, and many cherished family members and friends. He is survived by his grateful children Terrence (Ellen) McCabe of Upper Nyack, NY, Patricia (Vincent) McLaughlin of Saddle River, NJ, Daniel (Amy) McCabe of Upper Saddle River, NJ, Eileen (Edward) Sares of Upper Nyack, NY, Kate McCabe of Piermont, NY, his beloved goddaughter Theresa Morgan and nephew John Morgan, as well as his sister-in-law Mary Nolan. He is also survived by his cherished grandchildren Diane (Thomas) Brady, Dennis McLaughlin, Brian (Bobbi) McLaughlin, Lauren (Jeffrey) Sytsma, Tim (Katie) McLaughlin, Terrence, Kevin and Erin McCabe, Maggie, Emma, Cassie and Anna McCabe, Isabelle, Lulu and Fabrizio Sares and great grandchildren Erin (Ian), Caroline, Eileen and Paul Brady, Brianna, McKenna and Teagan McLaughlin. Terrence is also survived by his lifelong friend and business partner Simon L. Blauman of Boca Raton, FL.

The family would like to thank Sophia Campbell and all of the extraordinarily kind and compassionate women who assisted Terry in his final years; the Dominican Sisters and all of the lovely people at Dowling Gardens, as well as Dr. Charles Vialotti and the staff of Villa Marie Claire Hospice.

The family will receive visitors at Hannemann Funeral Home in Nyack, NY on Friday, August 16th from 4-8 pm. A funeral mass will be held on Saturday, August 17th at 10am at St. John the Baptist Roman Catholic Church in Piermont, NY, with Internment to follow at Gethsemane Cemetery in Terry’s favorite running spot of Rockland Lake State Park, in Congers, NY.

In lieu of flowers, the family would like to request donations in Terrence’s memory to the Helen Hayes Rehabilitation Hospital Foundation at https://helenhayeshospitalfoundation.com/donate-give/.
