Robert Frederick Gise
Robert Frederick Gise of Nyack, NY, passed away on September 3, 20019, one day shy of his 97th birthday.

A resident of Nyack for most of his life, Robert was born on September 4, 1922, to Harold P. and Evelyn M. Gise. He graduated from Nyack High School in 1939. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1942 and attained the rank of corporal. After serving in anti-aircraft training battalions in the U.S., Robert served in Company 1, 394th Infantry Regiment, 99th Division, in the European theater. He was honorably discharged in 1945.

Robert married Genevieve Porri on May 15, 1949 at St. Catherine’s Church in Blauvelt. They were married for 69 years.

Robert had a long and illustrious career in banking. He began his career at the Nyack Bank and Trust Company (later Marine Midland Bank), working there from 1939-1975, and later worked at the Nanuet National Bank (later the Bank of New York and Chase Bank) from 1975-1989. He retired in 1989 as Executive Vice President and Comptroller.

Community service was a vital part of Robert’s character. He volunteered as treasurer for many local organizations, including St. Ann’s Church, Nyack’s American Legion Post, the Nyack School District, and the Rockland County Chapter of the American Red Cross. He was Treasurer and Trustee at the Nyack Library for 36 years and was also Past President of the Nyack Rotary Club, the Rockland County Bankers Association, and the Nyack and Orangetown Republican Committees.

Robert is survived by two daughters, Mary Louise Moore (Matthew) of Kingston, PA, and Joanne Mattern (James) of Suffern, NY, as well as four grandchildren, Christina, Leanne, Grace, and Nicholas Mattern. He was predeceased by his wife, Genevieve, in 2018, and his brother, Gerald, in 1992.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Ann’s Church in Nyack on Friday, September 6, at 10:00, followed by internment in Oak Hill Cemetery in Nyack. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Nyack Library or the Nyack Rotary Club.
