Obituary for Veronica M. "Vera" Greaney

Veronica M. "Vera" Greaney
Veronica (Vera) Mary Farrell Clark Greaney passed away surrounded by loved ones at the age of 97 on December 31, 2019 in New City, New York. Vera was born, along with her beloved identical twin sister Dot, in the Bronx on March 25, 1922, the youngest daughters of James Farrell and Mary Kirby. She was the last of the seven Farrell siblings and was predeceased by her brothers and sisters - Jim, Billy, Florence, Kitty, Edna and Dot. She graduated from Morris High School in the Bronx in 1940.
In 1943, Vera married her high school sweetheart, Bernard T. Clark. She became a widow and then a young mother to her first son, Bernie, after her husband was tragically killed on a training flight during World War II. In 1952, mutual friends introduced her to Joseph Greaney, a widower with two young daughters, Lisa and Laura. They married six weeks later and in the first two years of their marriage, added three more sons to their family: twins Jim and Joe Jr, and Frank. Eventually, the Greaney clan would expand to include Tom and Mary.
The family lived for 25+ years in Stony Point, NY where, in addition to keeping a spotless house and feeding a small army daily, Vera was President of the Catholic Mother’s Club and actively supported the Democratic Party.
In 1978, Joe retired from his long teaching career, and they moved to Mystic, CT. Vera was widowed again when Joe passed away in 1995. She continued to live in Mystic independently until she was 92 and drove her car until she was 90. For the past 6 years, she resided at The Promenade in Chestnut Ridge, NY.
Vera’s family circle expanded as daughters-in-laws (Donna, Lisa, Jessica and Betsy) and sons-in-laws (Louie and Mick) were added. The circle grew as grandchildren arrived – Tom (April), Marah (James), Brooke, Julia (Tom), Matt (Holly), Laura, Michael, Lindsay (Ryan Charles), Ryan, Aidan, and Matthew. And then came the Great-Grandchildren – Kylene, Alex, Jack, Quinn, Tanner, Andrew, Cooper, Ellie and Hannah.
She had a very close relationship with her twin Dot Hudson and a strong bond with her twin’s children – Barbara, Mary, Donna, Regina, Kaye, Rosa, Eddie, Mattie, Vickie, and Mark. Vera was blessed to know and love nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews in the Yannacco, Meehan and Johns branches of the Farrell tree. Vera also had many good friends and was a good friend to many throughout her life.
Vera was never happier than when there was a big gang around and her holiday meals were extraordinary. She was full of life, humor, and colorful sayings. She loved a good bawdy joke and her cackling laugh (especially when heard in stereo with Dot’s nearly identical one) is legend. She will be fondly remembered for her love of family, cooking, feeding people, crochet, needlework, crossword puzzles, and babies.
Vera’s family will host a Celebration of Life at Hanneman Funeral Home in Nyack, NY on January 11th, 2020 at 11:00 am.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the Joe Raso Hospice Residence, United Hospice of Rockland, 11 Stokum Lane, New City, NY 10956 or online at https://hospiceofrockland.org/giving/donate
