SISTER LOUIS MARIE BAXTER, OP formerly Margaret M. Baxter, a member of the Sisters of St. Dominic of Blauvelt, New York for the past 73 years died on February 27, 2020 in St. Martin de Porres Community at the Motherhouse in Blauvelt. Sister Louis Marie was 92 years of age.

Sister Louis Marie was born to Annie Foley and Terence Baxter on August 1, 1927 in New York City. She entered the Sisters of St. Dominic on September 12, 1946 from Good Shepherd Parish, NY. Sister received the Dominican habit on September 2, 1947, professed her first vows on September 3, 1948, and her final vows on September 5, 1951.

Sister held a BS in Education from Fordham University in the Bronx and a MS in Elementary Education, Richmond/SUNY.
Sister’s many years of active ministry were devoted to education as a teacher, principal, educational coordinator, and Superintendent of Lavelle School for the Blind. She taught in the following schools: St. Benedict, Bronx (1949-55); Our Lady of the Assumption, Bronx, (1955-63); St. Pius Elementary, Bronx, (1963-68). Sr. Louis Marie served as Principal at St. Charles, Staten Island, (1968-75), and St. Lucy, Bronx, (1975-85). She was at Resurrection School, Rye, NY (1985-86). In 1986 she coordinated special services to non-public schools in Staten Island. She was Superintendent of Lavelle School for the Blind (1989-1997). Sister served as librarian at St. Raymond HS Bronx, (1998-2006). Sister retired to Marian Woods, Hartsdale, N.Y in 2006 where she was active in prayer ministry until 2015 when she returned to the Motherhouse in Blauvelt.

In addition to her religious congregation, Sr. Louis Marie is survived by her niece Peggy Ann Murphy, nephew Robert Murphy, cousins, Margaret McGean, Jane De la Cruz, and Thomas Reagan. Sister was predeceased by her parents Terence and Annie Foley Baxter, her sisters Anne and Catherine, her brother Terence, her nephew Terence.

Arrangements have been made by Hannemann Funeral Home, Nyack, NY.
