It is with great sadness that we share the passing of Daniel E. Sterns, 57, of New City, NY on Saturday March 21st after a brief battle with cancer. Dan was born on July 4, 1962 in Nyack, NY and was a lifelong resident of Rockland County. He grew up in Valley Cottage and attended St. Paul’s Elementary School and Nyack High School. At Nyack HS Dan starred in football, hockey and lacrosse. He was named All Rockland in lacrosse and football his junior and senior years and served as captain of both teams. Daniel went on to The University of Delaware where he played lacrosse and helped take the team to the NCAA tournament. The friendships he formed with his teammates there were lifelong and priceless. It was also there that he met his future wife. Daniel enjoyed sports of any kind, music and nature but his first and foremost passion was his family which meant absolutely everything to him. Dan is survived by his college sweetheart and wife of almost 30 years, Laurie, and his beautiful daughters Courtney, 25 and Kaylee, 20 who were his greatest source of pride. He leaves behind his 5 most cherished siblings, Richard (Kathleen), Billy (Sue), Catherine (Charlie), John (Christine) and Anne (Eddie). You’ve never met a closer family and they were all there for him every step of the way during his illness. He also leaves behind numerous loving relatives including his nieces and nephews, his Clements in-laws and more friends than anyone ever had. Daniel was predeceased by his father Richard, his mother Margaret, and his father-in-law, Russ Clements. Everyone who knew Dan enjoyed his warm smile, his generous spirit and his gentle nature. In recent years, his love of lacrosse continued, and he still played on many club teams at 57 years old, most recently Griffin Lacrosse. He cherished his time with his lax buddies at the Lake Placid tournament every summer. Dan was a fanatical New York Giants fan. He carried on a family tradition and was a season ticket holder for many years, attending games with his wingman Christian Raab. He had a devoted tailgating crew, who are now missing a key teammate. Daniel had a long career as a private investigator. He was an active parishioner at St. Francis Church and a member of the Knights of Columbus. The world has lost one of the truly greatest of men and we are all better for having known him.
“…And think of him as living in the hearts of those he touched…For nothing loved is ever lost and he was loved so much.”
In lieu of flowers please make donations in Daniel’s name to Nyack Youth Lacrosse, 113 Birchwood Ave, Nyack, NY 10960 or the Wildlife Conservation Society at wcs.org or WCS, ATTN: Donations, 2300 Southern Blvd, Bronx, NY 10460.
