Sister Jean  Beagan, O.P.
SISTER JEAN BEAGAN, O.P., formerly Sister Jean Miriam, a member of the Sisters of St. Dominic of Blauvelt, New York, for the past 79 years, died on April 6, 2020 in St. Martin de Porres Community at the Motherhouse in Blauvelt. Sister. Jean was 96 years of age.

Sister Jean was born to Charles Beagan and Jean Wood on May 3, 1923 in New York City. She entered the Sisters of St. Dominic on September 8, 1940 from St. Nicholas of Tolentine Parish, Bronx, N.Y. Sister received the Dominican habit on July 2, 1941, professed first vows on July 3, 1942, and final vows on August 26, 1945.

Sister held the B.S. in Education from Catholic Teachers College, Rhode Island and the M.S. in Educational Psychology from Fordham University, Bronx, New York.

Sister’s many years of active ministry were devoted to the education and care of youth. Her ministries included: St. Pius School, Providence, RI, (1943-1952);
St. Mary Star of the Sea School, Bronx, N.Y., (1952-1955); St. Mary School, Bronx, N.Y., (1955-1958) St. Pius V HS, Bronx, N.Y. (1958-69); St. Dominic’s Home, Blauvelt, N.Y. Education and Health Coordinator, Therapist, (1969-76); St. Dominic’s Home Personnel Director, (1976-1978); Co-Director of the Dominican Reflection Center, Ossining, N.Y. (1978-1986). Sister ministered at Hope House Ministries, Port Jefferson, N.Y. as psychologist and therapist in various programs throughout the agency (1986-2012). Due to declining health, Sister returned to the Motherhouse and retired April 2013.

In addition to her religious congregation, Sister. Jean is survived by her sister-in-law Evelyn Beagan, niece Deidre Beagan, and several cousins. Sister was predeceased by her parents Charles and Jean, sister, Joan Friedlander, and her brother Charles.

Burial will take place in St. Dominic’s Cemetery on Thursday, April 9, 2020.

A memorial Mass will take place at a later date.

Arrangements have been made by Hannemann Funeral Home, Nyack, New York.

In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the Sisters of St. Dominic, Blauvelt, N.Y.
