SISTER RUTH MITCHELL, O.P., formerly Sister Ruth Joseph, a member of the Sisters of St. Dominic of Blauvelt, New York for the past 56, years, died on May 6, 2020 in Good Samaritan Hospital. Sister Ruth was 73, years of age.
Sister Ruth was born to Joseph and Ruth Roff Mitchell on January 24, 1947 in the Bronx, New York. She entered the Sisters of St. Dominic on September 8, 1964 from Our Lady of Grace Parish, Bronx, New York. Sister received her habit on June 16, 1965; professed her first vows on June 17, 1966, and final vows on June 4, 1972.
Sister held the BA in Education from Dominican College, Orangeburg, N.Y. and the MS in Education from Fordham University, Bronx, N.Y. She was a graduate of the Leadership Rockland Class of 1994 and a founding member ROAR (Religious Organizations Along the River).
Sister’s many years in ministry included teaching in St. Brendan School, (1968-1970); St. Paul’ School, (1970-1971); Fr. Lopez HS, (1971-1973) all in Florida; Holy Spirit School, (1973-1974) Bronx, N.Y.; Our Lady of the Sacred Heart, (1979-1981) Tappan, N.Y. Sister served in the House on the Hill Migrant Worker Daycare Program (1974-1979) in Goshen, N.Y. Sister was a teacher/Principal at St. Martin de Porres, (1981-1987) in Poughkeepsie N.Y. She was appointed Treasurer of the Congregation (1987-1999). At the time of her death, Sister Ruth was serving as a Counselor at Emmaus House, Ocean Grove, N.J., (1999- present).
In addition to her religious congregation, Sister Ruth is survived by her twin brother Thomas, and her sister-in-law, Elaine, and nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, Joseph and Ruth, and her brother, Joseph.
Burial will take place in St. Dominic’s Convent Cemetery.
A memorial Mass will be held at a later date.

Arrangements have been made by Hannemann Funeral Home, Nyack, N.Y.
In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the Sisters of St. Dominic, Blauvelt, N.Y.
