Obituary for
Lore W. DeMone
It is with the greatest sadness that the family of Lore W. DeMone of the Bronx, N.Y. and South Yarmouth, Mass., announces her death at age 97 of COVID-19 complications on May 27, 2020.
Lore was born in 1922 in Ragnit, East Prussia, Germany, and emigrated with her parents to Canada in 1925 and, when the quota opened for German citizens, to the U.S. in 1928. She attended parochial schools in the Bronx, and graduated in 1941 from James Monroe High School. After working on Wall Street, she married army veteran and Bronx firefighter Frederick J. Hellauer in 1947. After his death in 1956 in the tragic Third Avenue Fire, she worked as a waitress and raised their two daughters.
In 1967 Lore married Pat DeMone of Mt. Vernon, N.Y. and they retired to South Yarmouth, Mass. in 1988. After his death in 1995, Lore appreciated the company of her dear friends from her bereavement group and the Yarmouth Senior Center. They traveled together often in the U.S. and Europe, and enjoyed Cape Cod life. Lore was also an avid gardener and a skillful knitter.
To be closer to family, in 2016 Lore moved to Brightview Senior Living in Tarrytown, N.Y., where she made new friends and saw her family every day.
Lore is survived by her two daughters, Susan Hellauer of Nyack, N.Y., and Lisa Varley of Rochester, N.Y.; four grandchildren, Christopher Varley, Erin Varley, Rachel Collier, and Melora Wiley; and four great-grandchildren, Roman, Tommy, Amy, and Ethan; and several generations of cousins in the U.S. and Germany.
