Obituary for Donald Vernon

Donald Vernon
Donald (Don) Vernon of Grand View on Hudson died in the comfort of his home on August 3rd at the age of 96. As with so many of the Greatest Generation, he faithfully served God, country, community and family with honor, integrity and quiet strength. He had a strong sense of duty and commitment to the organizations he served, often assuming leadership roles.

Born and raised in Ossining, NY, he maintained life-long friendships with childhood chums. He enjoyed ongoing contact with friends through membership in the venerable Point Senasqua Rod and Reel Club.

He enlisted in the Navy in 1943, trained as an Aviator (Navigator/Bombardier) and continued serving in the Naval Reserve until 1968, retiring with the rank of Lieutenant.

A graduate of New York University with Undergraduate and Master degrees in Engineering, he enjoyed applying his skills to a diverse career in the consulting, financial and real estate industries.

In 1958, he and his wife Ursula built a home in Grand View and began a life-long love of the unique character of the Village and the majestic Hudson that subtly influences all who live along her shores.

He served the Village of Grand View in various capacities for over 50 years, first as Village Board member, where he applied his engineering skills to solving problems with the road, sewer, and drainage. During the 70’s he could often be seen during fierce storms, in the pouring rain, inspecting and tending to road drains to facilitate proper drainage along River Road! His passion for the Village of Grand View and preserving her unique features led him to half a century of service on the Village Zoning and Planning Boards where he meticulously and steadfastly applied the zoning laws that keep Grand View true to her name.

He also served the Town of Orangetown on the Sewer Advisory Committee during the 70’s and Rockland County on the Municipal Planning Federation for 23 years, sharing his knowledge and wisdom to guide and shape County planning policy for generations to come.

An active member of the Piermont Reformed Church since 1964, he served on the church governing board for 53 years. On Sundays he could be found enthusiastically greeting fellow worshippers, helping dry coffee-hour cups in the kitchen and even sweeping the floors.

He was preceded by Ursula, his beloved wife of 65 years, and is survived by daughters Lorena and Carol.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to:

Piermont Reformed Church

A memorial service will be held at a future date.
