Obituary for Oliver Wendell Oates Sr.

Oliver Wendell  Oates Sr.
Oliver Wendell Oates, Sr (1944-2020) of West Nyack, NY passed away on September 25, 2020 at Nyack Hospital. Oliver is survived by his wife of 53 years Essie Franklin Oates; daughter Shonyta Oates; son Oliver Oates, Jr; sisters Benay Whittaker, Beverly Oates, and Veronica Hunt; brothers William Oates Jr. and Carl Oates; nieces Akilah Oates, Makeda Oates, Erica Oates, and Jontil Hunt; nephew Zuri Barrow; and his beloved dog Jazzy. He is also survived by many beloved relatives and lifelong friends who became family such as Sandra T. Davis, Kenneth Alper, and Luba Rodina.
He was born in Winston-Salem, NC to the late William Oates and Beatrice Lee Oates. He grew up in the Bronx, NY where he graduated from Samuel Gompers High School. He received hisBA in Business Administration from Baruch College and his Masters in Health Care Administration from Long Island University. He was drafted into the US Army in the mid 60's and was stationed in Knoxville, TN where he met his wife Essie. They lived briefly in the Bronx then moved to West Nyack, NY in 1977 with their 5 year old daughter. They welcomed their son in 1980.
Oliver worked at Cardinal Cooke Hospital in Manhattan as a Business Administrator for many years before changing careers and working for Rockland Toyota in 1995. He was extremely successful and became well known in the area. He received multiple awards and accolades. He retired in 2014 for health reasons and focused on staying home with his close knit family and his dogs.
Oliver was well loved and respected by his friends, peers, former colleagues, neighbors and people in the community. He was very charming, funny and personable. He had a charismatic personality which resulted in him being renowned in the County of Rockland.
Oliver will be forever missed by his family and all who knew him.
A memorial service will be held in the future.

Graveside Service will be held Saturday, October 10th at 11am at Rockland County Frederick Loescher Veterans Memorial Cemetery.
