Howard Clifton Brawner, 98, of Piermont, NY, born on May 8, 1922, in Wynne, AR, passed peacefully on March 16, 2021.

A patriotic American, he served in the U.S. Navy from 1942-1948 as a Radio Technician in WWII, proud to have been educated at the University of Wisconsin and M.I.T. to operate the first aircraft early warning system. Howard retired from the New York Telephone Co. in 1976 after 25 years, and then from Herb Lack Paints, Nyack in 2005.

Over the years, he was recognized for an abundance of various volunteer community service: coach and president of the Piermont T-Shirt League, The Village Emergency Committee, Captain of the Piermont Fire Department Ambulance, Piermont Rotary Club, Village trustee, First Reformed Church consistory, Empire Hose Co. No. 1 volunteer for 66 years (President 1960-1970). Howard and his wife Ruth were proud residents of Piermont and were avid collectors of Piermont history by collecting photos, newspaper articles, and slides. Their goal was to preserve the history of the village.

A loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather, he is survived by his granddaughters Sally (Scott), Emery (Kevin), Willy (Richard), and Mariel; son-in-law Mark, six great-grandchildren; Taylor (Ribka), Grace, Grady, Aidan, Clark, and Blake; caregiver and friend, Peaches. Howard was predeceased by his beloved wife, Ruth, his daughters Linda and Nancy, grandson Kade, son-in-law Lenny, and his ten siblings and parents.

Howard, A.K.A., Papa, enjoyed a full life, cooking, baking, tending his flowers, feeding the birds, and spending time with his grand and great-grandchildren. He will always be thought of as a gentle, kind, and patient man. He was known by many and will be remembered by his purple house, relaxing on his porch with his cigar.

A gathering of friends and family will be held at Rockland Cemetery on Saturday, March 20th, 2021, at 11 am.
