Obituary for Dr. Aubrey G. Clarke

Dr. Aubrey G. Clarke
Aubrey Granville Clarke, son, husband, Dad, Aub, teacher, physician, was born on December 7, 1951, in New York, NY. He was the first of two sons of the late Dorothy L. Clarke and Oswald G. Clarke and brother to the late Gary M. Clarke.

Aubrey grew up in the family home in the Bronx, and at the age of fourteen, his mother signed him up for karate classes in Chinatown to help “harness his energy.” This led to a lifelong love of the martial arts. He would later go on to earn the title of 4th Degree Black Belt in Goju Ryu Karate.

After completing his bachelors at Fordham University, he pursued postgraduate studies at Howard University College of Medicine. In 1977, he started his relationship with Harlem Hospital as an intern. Aubrey was board certified in Internal Medicine and Cardiology and was a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology. Aubrey held several leadership roles during his 45-years at Harlem Hospital. Aubrey was well-respected in the Harlem community and would go on to receive many awards, most recently the Doctor Muriel Petioni Distinguished Healer Award in August 2016. In addition to his busy hospital schedule, for thirty-eight years Aubrey worked part-time at the Mount Vernon Neighborhood Health Center as a Cardiology Consultant.

Aubrey was a skilled physician and loved medicine. He devoted his life to his beloved patients and regularly took time out to pray with the families of patients in his care. He participated in many research projects and publications, trained interns and residents, and enjoyed a stellar reputation in the medical profession.

Outside of his professional responsibilities, Aubrey was an avid tennis player, cyclist, cross-bow archer, and appreciator of animals and nature. He loved music and was the DJ-in-residence at family parties, holiday gatherings, and afternoons at home. He enjoyed singing and performed with the First Community Church of the Nazarene choir. He loved gathering with family and friends for good food, conversation, and dancing. A devoted husband, he even surprised his wife with Mother’s Day flowers that he ordered from the hospital three days before he passed. He was an active and present father, applauding from the front row of countless dance performances, helping with homework, giving life advice, and spending quality time with his daughters. In 2019, Aubrey was delighted to become a grandfather for the first time, and he spent joyous hours holding, singing to, and playing with his two grandchildren.

Aubrey was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma in January 2020. He continued working despite his health challenges. On May 5th, 2022, he completed a final half-day of work before asking his wife to take him to the hospital. Aubrey slipped away peacefully on Wednesday, May 11th, 2022 surrounded by his wife, children, and close friends.

He is survived by his devoted wife Claudette Clarke; daughters Tiffany Clarke (with husband Evan Axelrad) and Tamara Cadwallader Clarke (with husband Garrett Cadwallader); grandchildren August and Naomi; mother-in-law Betty Campbell; brothers-in-law John Campbell (with wife Joanne Hicks-Campbell), Wayne Campbell, and Delroy Campbell; sister-in-law Sheree Campbell; cousins; godchildren; and devoted friends.

Although we bid farewell to Aubrey, we can take solace in knowing that he lived a full life and had no regrets. Most importantly, we take solace in knowing he loved the Lord. Through God’s grace, he is no longer in pain. We love him and will miss him. Let us honor his legacy by reflecting on the values and principles by which he lived, and by letting his good deeds extend from one generation to the next. In so doing, we pay true homage to this remarkable man and honor his eternal spirit. He is with the Lord.
