Obituary for Karen Jane Kennell

Karen Jane  Kennell
Karen Kennell, a long-time member of the Nyack community, died on July 22nd at the age of 77. She was born in San Angelo, Texas to a military family who settled on their homestead, a dairy farm in Sussex, NJ for several years. Ultimately most of her childhood was spent in Poughkeepsie, NY. She graduated from Poughkeepsie High School in 1962 and was a class of 1965 graduate from SUNY at New Paltz with a degree in Elementary Education, and later a Masters.
In 1965 Karen married Henry Kennell, a gas station owner from Palisades. They had one daughter who currently resides in Maryland. Mr. Kennell passed away in 2016.
Karen began teaching at the Upper Nyack Elementary School in 1966 and continued a 37 year career there educating 4th grade students until her retirement.
She is survived by her daughter, Lauren; sister and brother-in-law, Sharon and Bill Kopstein; cousins, Stacey and Mark Hutzler, and their children, Chelsea and Jacob.
Karen was deeply involved in her community in many organizations. She was a member of the Teachers’ Union, First Reformed Church of Nyack, the Friends of the Nyacks, the Historical Society, and the Garden Club.
With her enthusiasm, winning smile and loving spirit…she will be missed by all who knew her.
A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, September 24, 2022 at 10:30 AM at the First Reformed Church in Nyack, NY.
