Obituary for Evelyn Pearl Cohen

Evelyn Pearl Cohen
Evelyn Pearl Pitchenick Cohen, 93, of West Nyack, NY, passed away on September 3rd in New City, NY, surrounded by her family.

Evelyn was born in Brooklyn to Benjamin and Bertha Pitchenick on January 11, 1929. After she graduated from Lafayette High School in 1945, she met the love of her life, Leonard Cohen, on a blind date. They later moved to Pearl River, NY with their three children, Chuck, Mitchell, and Risa.

Evelyn graduated from St. Thomas Aquinas College with her Bachelor’s in Education and received her Master’s in education from Yeshiva University. She taught in the Nanuet School district for over twenty years. After she retired, Evelyn and Lenny spent winters in Deerfield Beach, FL, where she enjoyed painting, playing tennis, book clubs, and bridge nights with her many friends. She and Lenny were adventurers, they traveled the world together in their golden years. She was the first to help a friend in need, and she will be remembered for her acts of community service—specifically her volunteering with The Center for Safety and Change. Evelyn is survived by her three children and her grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held at Hannemann Funeral Home on September 11th at 10 AM. The burial will follow at Wellwood Cemetery in West Babylon, NY. The family would like to thank the community for their ongoing support. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The Center for Safety and Change, formerly The Rockland Family Shelter.
