Obituary for Betty Sue Lindsey

Betty Sue McDaniel Lindsey of South Nyack went to be with her Lord and Savior on September 30, 2022 after a brief illness. She was born on August 26, 1932 in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Her family and friends knew her as Sue.

Sue began her undergraduate work at Nyack College in the 1950s, and finished that degree during the 1970s, after her own children were in school. At Nyack College in the 50s, she focused on playing the piano and organ, and became an extremely accomplished Church pianist and organist. She always enjoyed working with young children, and turned that passion into a career teaching (mostly) Kindergarten in the Nyack Public Schools. Early in her teaching career, she attended Manhattanville College in Purchase, NY and earned her Masters degree in Special Education.

Upon retiring from Nyack Public Schools, she volunteered for many years at Grace’s Thrift Shop in Nyack, NY. She also walked miles a day on the Hillside where she lived, or along Broadway or at Rockland Lake. Sue loved her view of the Hudson River and Tappan Zee bridge, and found peace enjoying the spectacular views. She also became a devoted Nana to her triplet grandsons. She was especially beloved for the hand-decorated Christmas cookies that she made for them and her friends and family. She was always happy to make meals for anyone in need.

Although a self-confessed worrier, Sue’s faith and Church were always a comfort. She enjoyed giving to her Church, and was very generous with her grandchidren and children in her extended family, and especially loved to give them wonderful children’s books.

She is survived by her son James Lindsey of South Nyack; her daughter Judy Harbison (Richard Slowey), and grandsons Arthur, Brian and Charles Harbison, of Falmouth, MA.

A memorial service will be held at 12;00 Noon on Saturday, October 29, 2022 at Clarkstown Reformed Church, 107 Strawtown Road in West Nyack, NY. Donations can be made in Betty's memory to the Clarkstown Reformed Church.
