Obituary for Dr. Jefferson J. Weishaar Jr.

Dr. Jefferson J. Weishaar Jr.
Dr. Jefferson Jackson Weishaar, Jr. of Upper Nyack, passed away peacefully at home on June 14. He was the loving husband of Helen for 73 years. Born May 15, 1918 in Brooklyn, NY to Dr. Jefferson J and Ellen B. Weishaar, Jeff and his family moved to Mansfield Avenue in South Nyack in 1932. A proud 1936 graduate of Nyack High School, he graduated from Long Island University and received his dental degree from Harvard School of Dental Medicine. During World War II, he served as a junior dental officer aboard the aircraft carrier USS Bataan CVL-29 in the Pacific theater.

After the war, he joined his father’s practice in Nyack. His brother, Dr. Robert Weishaar soon joined the practice and the three worked together for many years.

Dr. Weishaar was a 60 year member of the Nyack Rotary Club and past District Governor of Rotary International, where he was named a Paul Harris Fellow. He was a 70 year member of Orangetown Fire Co. No. 1. At various times, he served on multiple local boards including the Upper Nyack Village Board, the Zoning Board of Appeals and as President of the Nyack School Board. He was a faithful member of the First Reformed Church of Nyack, serving in many capacities during his lifetime.

In 1943, he married Helen L. Small, the couple having met when they were students in Boston. She survives him as do two of their three children: Marianne (Robert) Hirschman and Marjorie Weishaar (Stephen McGarvey), their 4 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren. Their son, Dana, passed away in 2014.

The family thanks Dr. Roy Eriksen for his many years of personal, attentive care.

A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, June 24 at 11:00am at the First Reformed Church of Nyack, 18 South Broadway, Nyack, NY.
