Barbara A.  Van Cura
Barbara Ann Van Cura (nee McDermott), 90, of Congers, NY, passed away on Saturday, June 24, 2023. Barbara was born on June 2,1933 to Mary Grace and Robert McDermott in Nyack, NY. She grew up in South Nyack, NY, and attended St. Ann’s School in Nyack, and graduated from St. Cecilia’s Catholic High School in Englewood, NJ. She married Robert VanCura and raised her family in Upper Nyack, and later in Orange County, NY.
She is survived by her five children and their spouses: William Van Cura (Lisa), Robert Van Cura (Elizabeth), James Van Cura (Janis), Luella Sartario, and Peter Van Cura (Jaime), as well as her grandchildren Colleen Monaco (Kurt), Craig Van Cura (Katie), Dominick Sartario, Andrew Van Cura, Hunter Van Cura and Austin Van Cura, and her great grandchild Kamden Monaco. She is also survived by her sisters Luella Leitner and Marilyn Ryder, and her brother Robert McDermott Jr. (Linda).
Barbara worked as the Assistant Director of the Western Orange County Head Start in Middletown, NY. Barbara enjoyed doing crossword puzzles, reading novels, and watching sporting events, but most of all she loved raising her children and grandchildren, and spending time with her family.
Visiting hours are Wednesday, June 28, 2023, from 3-7 PM at the Hannemann Funeral Home, 88 South Broadway, Nyack, NY. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Ann’s Roman Catholic Church, 16 Jefferson Street, Nyack, NY on Thursday, June 29, 2023, at 10 AM, with internment to follow at Gethsemane Cemetery, Rockland Lake, NY. In lieu of flowers, donations in Barbara’s name may be made to the Tolstoy Foundation Rehabilitation & Nursing Center, 100 Lake Road, Valley Cottage, New York 10989.
