Obituary for Marilyn Toby Davis Cohen

Marilyn Toby Davis  Cohen
Marilyn Toby Davis Cohen of West Nyack, NY passed away on October 6th 2023 at the age of 87.
Marilyn was born on May 13th 1936 in Brooklyn, NY to Harry and Anna (Bardach) Davis. She graduated from A.B. Davis High School in 1953 then earned her BA Degree in English at Hunter College in 1957. Following graduation, she taught at Henry Barnard Elementary School in New Rochelle.
Marilyn married Elliott Cohen, Ph.D., in 1958 and they raised three children: Andy (deceased), Russell, and Diana. They first lived in Mount Vernon, moved to Pearl River in 1963, and subsequently settled in West Nyack in 1981.
After leaving teaching to raise her children, Marilyn went back to work in a variety of positions. She was an EMT in the Pearl River Volunteer Ambulance Corp, a medical writer for the Nathan S. Kline Institute of Psychiatric Research, and subsequently a coordinator for the Literacy Volunteers of Rockland County. Marilyn served as president of the League of Women Voters of Rockland County and volunteered at Planned Parenthood.
Marilyn and Elliott were long standing members of Beth Am Temple in Pearl River. She served in the temple choir, the Sisterhood, and a variety of volunteer roles.
Over the years, she performed in multiple choirs across the county, played bridge with her friends, and enjoyed the outdoors. She was an avid enthusiast of the arts and frequented many exhibits, plays, operas, and ballets with her close friends and family.
Marilyn and Elliott traveled to many countries around the world over the years. She was a lover of nature and wildlife.
Marilyn was a devoted wife, sister, mother, and grandmother. She is survived by her loving husband of 64 years, Elliott Cohen, brother Jules Davis (Janet), son Dr. Russell Cohen (Cheryl), daughter Diana Churchill (Ray), and her six grandchildren: Anna, Gabriel, Samantha, Madeline, Danae, and Kaelin.
Marilyn was preceded in death by her son Andy Cohen (Diane Pezanoski).
In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations made in Marilyn’s memory to Beth Am Temple, Pearl River NY or to the National Audubon Society.
