Obituary for Ernest "Ernie" Mele

Ernest "Ernie" Mele
It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of Ernest Mele, beloved father to Valerie (Patrick) Schmidt, Elaine Mele, Kristina Geraghty and “Grampy” to his adoring grandchildren Sophia, Aedan, Sienna and Owen.

Ernie, as he was called by many, was born in the Bronx on July 6, 1938 to Rocco and Gladys (Elliot) Mele. In addition to his parents, Ernie was predeceased by his siblings, Ronnie, Rosie and Buddy, with whom he shared a close bond and countless laughs with over the years. Ernie attended Sacred Heart Elementary and Cardinal Hayes High School. After high school he enlisted in the Navy and after 2 years of service returned to complete his BA in History at Hunter College (NY).

In 1968, Ernie married Roberta (Storck) Mele; they soon relocated to Pearl River, NY. Although he loved history and yearned to be a teacher, he chose a career path in the insurance industry in order to provide for his soon to be growing family. He worked for many decades in the insurance agency and was loved by many for his easy going and welcoming personality. Ernie had a gift of being able to make everyone feel comfortable in his presence and had a smile that could light up a room. He demonstrated compassion for all living things, humans and animals, a value he continually instilled in his daughters and grandchildren. As a dog lover, Ernie was the proud owner of several rescue dogs throughout his life, including Baron, BJ, Ashley and Sweetie. It was well known that as each dog entered into their new life with Ernie, they would be the receiver of unconditional love and royal treatment. Even the dogs of other dog owners loved him.

His family feels so blessed that Ernie lived a long and full life. He enjoyed many travel adventures, enjoyed connecting with people from different walks of life and most importantly, had the opportunity to be the most incredible father and grandfather to his four grandchildren, who thought the world of him. He leaves a huge space in their hearts and lives.

A celebration of Ernie’s life will be held in the Spring where we look forward to gathering with the many people who adored him and were fortunate enough to call him Dad, Grampy, Uncle and friend.
