Joseph Peter Metelski

On the morning of Monday February 19th Joseph Peter Metelski died at the age of 91 at Tappan Zee Manor. The day before his death, he was surrounded by his family; his three children, a son in law, granddaughters and his aide.

Joe led a distinguished and interesting life and was beloved by all that knew him. He was a generous, funny, intelligent, and thoughtful person.

Joe was born to John and Emma Metelski in 1932 in Brooklyn NY. His father passed away during Joe’s early life and he had a difficult childhood. This led him to drop out of High School at age 16 and then, while still in his teens, enlist in the US Marine Corp during the Korean war. He spent the war time stationed in Korea, first as a forward observer and then as a Marine Sergeant, helping to lead a Platoon of Howitzers. When he returned state-side he participated in the testing of a nuclear bomb, and was designated as an ‘Atomic Marine’.

After the war he worked at Otis Elevator company where he met Mary (Pat) Miskell who was a secretary with the company.

Joe and Pat were married on June 9, 1956 in Manhattan NY. They had three children; Marybeth, Tricia and Peter, who they raised in New York City, London, England and the New York Suburbs. Shortly after getting married and starting a family, Joe, utilizing the GI Bill, attended Pace University at night while working during the day, eventually attaining a Master’s degree in Finance.

Joe worked in a few different companies before settling in at Mobil Oil, initially in Accounting and then Finance. Successful in the Finance department he was transferred and moved with his family to London, England to work as the Director of Middle Eastern Services. Often traveling to areas of the Middle East to lead negotiations for the building of Oil Refineries in countries like Iran, Iraq and Kuwait.

A devoted father, husband and grandfather, Joe is survived by his children and their spouses, Marybeth (Andrew Felt), Tricia (Rolf Enquist), Peter (Kathy Hahn), his four granddaughters, Liana (Ben Halpern), Josie (Elianna Boswell), Hannah (Sasha Juniper) and Ann (Kyle Klouman). Joe was preceded in death by his parents; John and Emma, his siblings; John, Frank and Mary and his wife, Pat.
