Obituary for Elaine Betty Simon

Elaine Betty Simon
Elaine Betty Simon, née Singer, died on March 14 at her home in Nyack, NY. She was 94.
She is survived by daughters Kathy and Meg, who were at her side. Her husband of 72+ years, Samuel, preceded her in death on October 9, 2023.
Elaine was born in Paterson, NJ. She graduated from George Washington University - which is where she met fellow student Sam. Marriage and a family took her to Queens, then Lynbrook Long Island, and ultimately, Nyack. She loved living in Nyack and would frequently extol the pleasures of living there. Chief among those pleasures were Didier’s, the Reformed Temple of Rockland, the Nyack Diner and Hakim at Old World Market.
She worked as a bookkeeper throughout her life. Her final job was at the accounting firm Berard & Donahue, a position she very much enjoyed.
Elaine was knowledgeable and fiercely passionate about politics, democratic principles and progressive causes. She was a longtime dedicated Orangetown Democratic Committee member. She volunteered on behalf of candidates she believed in - most recently, Elijah Reichlin-Melnick.
Elaine could be counted upon as an active volunteer for numerous organizations, including the Center for Safety and Change, Hospice of Rockland County, the social action committee of the Reformed Temple of Rockland and People to People.
Above all, she treasured her family and friends. She didn’t have grandchildren but reveled in her friends’ little ones and Meg and Kathy’s dogs and cats.
She was an exquisite knitter, a wonderful baker and an intrepid composer of doggerel.
The world is a better place for her having been in it.
Shiva will be observed on Tuesday from 3 PM to 8 PM at the home of Kay Levinson's, 21 Division Ave. South Nyack, NY 10960
