Obituary for Carmen Fernandez

Carmen Fernandez
Carmen Fernández, passed away peacefully on December 26, 2016 at her home in Nanuet in the company of her three daughters following a two year battle with Alzheimer's.

Carmen was born María del Carmen del Rosario Fernández Rivera in Havana Cuba on May 25, 1941 to the late Carmelina Rivera and Oscar Fernández. At the tender age of 19 she married and soon moved to Mayagüez, Puerto Rico fleeing the Castro regime. She raised her three daughters in Guaynabo, Puerto Rico and later followed them to the mainland US when they graduated college.

Carmen was fearless and independent. She was relentless when it came to her goals and dreams, finishing her college education at the Universidad Interamericana de Puerto Rico later in life, and running Carmen's Bed and Breakfast in Gardiner, New York. Carmen was a talented gardener, a great dancer, and loved caring for her cat, Ghetta. Her indomitable spirit will remain alive in our hearts forever.

Carmen enjoyed "paseos" or driving for pleasure in the car to beautiful spots. She loved these paseos by the beach when she lived in Florida, and through Condado and Old San Juan when her kids were young. One of her favorite spots to visit when she lived in Orange and Rockland counties, was Memorial Park in Nyack.

Carmen is survived by her loving family; daughters Deborah, Vanessa and Jacqueline; her son-in-law and Vanessa's husband, Ian Springle; her 4 grandchildren, Maximilian, Emilio, Inka and Melasia; her brother Oscar Jr.; her niece-in-law and comadre "Manina" Sandra Mesa; and her former husband of 30 years Roberto Urra.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10am on Monday January 2nd, 2017 at St. Joseph's Parish in Spring Valley, 245 North Main Street. Interment will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery in Nyack, NY. A celebration to honor her life will be held at 1pm at Hyenga Way Senior Housing Community Room on Pipetown Hill Road in Nanuet, NY.
