He was a 1956 graduate of Nyack High School, and went on to join the United States Air Force where he was stationed at Randolph Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas. After an honorable discharge in 1960, John enjoyed a long career working for the construction firm, Guy F. Atkinson. During this time he traveled extensively throughout the world, living in such places as Saudi Arabia, Chile, and Venezuela. After returning to the States years later, he worked for L.P. Transportation in Goshen, and most recently for the Nyack Parking Authority, where he was well known by local businesses and visitors alike for his kindness and good humor.

John is predeceased by his siblings, Joyce Leitner and Irving Rion. He leaves behind a loving, and well-loved, family including his first son, Jeffrey L. Rion of Mercersburg, Pennsylvania, his daughter, Caryl L. Rion of Roswell, Georgia, and his youngest son, John P. Rion of Napanoch, New York. John is also survived by his two adopted daughters, Jennifer and Arminda, along with his grandchildren, Jaclyn, Justin, Rheagan and Alan. He is also survived by his many nieces, nephews, and others who loved him dearly. He will also be missed by his beloved furry grandchildren, Murray and Spicey.

A celebration of his life will be held on Saturday, February 15th at Hannemann Funeral Home in Nyack, New York from 11 am to 1 pm. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations may be made in his name to the HiTor Animal Shelter in Pomona, New York.
