Obituary for Sister Mary Regis, RCD

Sister Mary Regis Beck, RCD died on May 8, 2020 at St. Cabrini’s Nursing Home, Dobbs Ferry, NY. She was born in New York, NY on May 28,1930, and was the daughter of John and Frances Beck and was given the name Mary Frances. She entered the Sisters of Our Lady of Christian Doctrine on Sept. 24, 1948 and given the religious name, Sister Mary Regis. She professed her first vows on May 22, 1951 and her final vows on June 28,1954.

Sr. Regis’s many years of active ministry were Religious Education and Parish Ministry. In her parish activities Sister served as a Eucharistic Minister, served the youth and the Seniors, and did Spiritual direction with anyone who asked. She was a member of the Parish Social Justice Committee serving the homeless and all in need.

She served from 1952-1954 at St. Rita’s, New Smyrna Beach, FL; from 1954-1959 at St. Ambrose's, Elkton, FL; from 1960-1965 at St. Mary’s, Eustis, FL. From 1966 onward, she served in New York State, including 14 summers at Marydell Camp. She lived in the convent of Our Lady of Mt Carmel in Mount Vernon, NY, 1987-1990. In 1990 she moved to St. Mary’s on Grand Street, New York, NY and spent 15 years serving in various parish ministries before retiring to Marydell Convent in Nyack, NY. In 2015 Sister moved to Marian Woods, a residence for Sisters in Hartsdale, NY. There she spent the last five years of her life happily convinced she had found heaven on earth.

In addition to her religious community, Sister leaves behind her parish community of St. Mary’s in New York, NY. This community loved and cherished her deeply. She was affectionately called the “giver of love” She loved everybody and especially children.
She presided over many wake services and brought comfort to all she met, she greeted them with that winning smile. She was honored by the Parish and given an award for outstanding community service. Whether Sister Regis was planning activities with a group of teenagers, doing adult education, teaching a religion class to children, visiting a hospital or nursing home, or in Parish ministry, she always met the other person with genuine respect, kindness and a gentle manner. Sister Regis has been a mentor for many whose lives she touched. Her love for God, her life of prayer and dedication were the signs of this woman of the Gospel.

Sister Regis Beck was predeceased by her parents: Frances Mary & John A. Beck, Sr; her siblings: John A. Beck, Jr & Theresa P. Kalin; her brother-in-law Felix S. (Bud) Kalin; her sister-in-law, Nora T. Beck; and her nephew, John A. Beck.

Sister Regis is survived by her nieces and nephews: Mary Ann Previte, Steven Miller, Karen & Robert Faiella, Mary F. & Rick Sladewski, and Michael T. Beck; as well as their five children (grand-nieces and grand-nephews), and one great-grand-niece.
