Obituary for Susan Leigh Goss

Susan Leigh Goss, 71, of Upper Nyack, New York, passed away on September 28, 2022, after her second battle with cancer.

Sue was born on February 14, 1951, to Leigh and Janet Egbert of Dansville, NY. After graduating from Dansville High School, Susan went on to study Journalism at Alfred University in Alfred, New York.

Sue loved to travel, and after college she spent several months in Alaska where she met Edward (Alec) Goss, whom she married on September 9, 1978. They were married for nearly 40 years before Alec passed away in July 2018.

Following their wedding, Sue and Alec moved to Nyack, New York, where they welcomed their daughter, Rachael. Following her birth, Sue left her job as an editor in the publishing industry to focus on motherhood until her daughter reached middle school. Sue then went back to school to become a teacher which she considered to be her calling. She started working as a teaching assistant at Valley Cottage Elementary until a position opened up teaching third grade.

Sue worked at Valley Cottage Elementary School for about 25 years. She loved teaching children and found joy in watching her students grow up and become members of the greater Nyack community where she could run into them again and again. Sue also loved spending time with her family and close friends, especially her daughter, Rachael, and granddaughter, Georgia.

Sue was a helper by nature and couldn't help but turn friends into family. Her kind laugh was infectious and she always looked for the good in everything. During her last few years, there was nothing she loved more than working on art projects and planting fairy gardens in her yard with Georgia, of whom she was so very proud.

Sue was preceded in death by both of her parents, her beloved husband, Alec, her older brother, John P. Egbert II and her eldest nephew, Christopher Hagen. She is survived by her daughter, Rachael Goss, her granddaughter, Georgia Moss, her sister, Sarah Mehlenbacher (Brent) and her nieces and nephews who loved her dearly: Elizabeth
Schulson (Benjamin), John Egbert, Corey Mehlenbacher, Haley Mehlenbacher, Patric Mehlenbacher and her great nieces, Chloe Schulson and Milly Schulson.

Sue will be missed by family, friends, colleagues, and neighbors.

A small ceremony for immediate family will be held on Thursday, October 6.
