Obituary for Dawna Y. Buckhout

Dawna Y.  Buckhout
Dawna Buckhout, a devoted Christian, passed away August 9, 2023 at the age of 87. Dawna was born in Pittsburgh PA on December 9, 1935 to Clarence and Virginia Sander. She was a smart, funny and creative woman.

She grew up in Maryland but spent most of her life in Nyack and West Haverstraw NY. She received her Bachelors of Physical Therapy from the University of Pittsburgh. After graduating, she met her beloved husband, Roy, in Maryland at a military dance in 1959. They shared 46 happy years together.

Dawna worked at Helen Hayes and Nyack Hospitals in the medical field and also as a teacher at Berean Christian School and as a teacher’s assistant at Upper Nyack Elementary School. After retirement, she spent many of her happiest moments crafting and sharing her creativity with others.

Dawna is survived by daughters, Deborah (and Michael) Serphillips of West Haven CT, and Christine Joy Buckhout (and Joseph Amster) of Valley Cottage NY, and son Steven (and Jean) Buckhout of Newburgh NY. Dawna has two granddaughters, Jennifer Buckhout of Newburgh and Emmelia Amster of Valley Cottage. She is also survived by one sister, Evelyn Barnhart of Greene NY, a sister-in-law, Penny Buckhout of Nyack NY and many nieces and nephews. Dawna was preceded in death by her loving husband, LeRoy; and preceded by her sister Fay and brother James.

A Wake will be held Wednesday, August 16th, from 5-8 PM at Hannemann's Funeral Home on S Broadway in Nyack NY. Funeral will be held Thursday, August 17th, at 11 AM at Risen King Alliance Church on New Hempstead Rd in New City NY. Burial will follow at Rockland Cemetery in Sparkill NY.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in her memory to the Risen King Alliance Church, 190 New Hempstead Rd, New City NY 10956 or to the Food Bank of the Hudson Valley, 195 Hudson St, Cornwall NY 12520.
