Obituary for Barry MacCartney

Barry MacCartney
On Thursday, August 10th, 2023, Barry MacCartney was unexpectedly called home at the age of 76.

Barry was born in Nyack, New York on February 1st, 1947 to father Harold Y. MacCartney and mother Catherine Guildersleeve MacCartney, the youngest of three sons. After graduating from Nyack High School in 1965 and attending Parsons School of Design with a focus in photography, he enlisted in the United States Army (1968-1970). During the Vietnam War, Barry served our country stationed in Zama, Japan, utilizing his skills as a still photographer in the Medical Research Lab.

Following his honorable discharge, Barry returned to Nyack, spending the majority of his work life as treasurer for both the Village of Upper Nyack and South Nyack in addition to being a volunteer firefighter/mountain rescue squad trainer for Empire Hook & Ladder. Barry loved all things outdoors and in his leisure time he could always be found caring for Widewater (the MacCartney family homestead), honing his still and aerial photography hobby or riding his motorcycle with the Hudson Valley Harley Riders. In 2016, Barry and his wife, Pegi retired to Lighthouse Point, Florida.

Barry is survived by his wife, Margaret “Pegi” Minford MacCartney, his daughter Catherine MacCartney and his 3 grandchildren, Elle, Brody and Natalie of Valley Cottage, New York along with brothers, Harold (Linda) and John (Ejane) and nephew, David (Annmarie). He will forever be remembered as a quiet and gentle soul who lived his life serving and helping others in need.

A private service with immediate family will be held at a later time. In his memory, the family requests donations to support the Wounded Warrior Project.
