Obituary for Juanita Byrd

Juanita Byrd
Juanita Byrd

March 4, 1934 – September 18, 2023

Juanita Byrd was born on March 9, 1934 in New York City. Juanita recalled having a sister and two brothers. Her mother, Helen Thomas, passed away while she was still a young child and Juanita spent many years after that as a resident at Letchworth Village until sometime in the late 1970’s.

Juanita was a kind, funny, gentle soul who spent over twenty happy years with the love of her life, Joe Carleo, and his family. She loved birthdays, casinos … and parties!!! Juanita loved to dress up – the more bling the better - and took great pride in her personal appearance, making sure her hair and nails were always perfect. During that time she also made many friends as she worked as a housekeeper at the Rockland County Adult Home.

After Joe’s passing in 2002, Juanita remained as a welcome part of his brother Mickey’s family, enjoying holidays and celebrations and all manner of family events. She also returned to the Adult Home , now as a resident, surrounded by friends and a wonderfully caring staff who always went the extra mile for her. Juanita enjoyed her shopping trips, always had a sparkle in her eye, loved to tease, and was the first to be up to sing and dance when there was any kind of entertainment. Juanita loved music and the sounds of “Feliz Navidad” could be heard from her room in any season. Her Christmas sweaters always lit up the room (literally!)

When Rockland County closed the Adult Home about 10 years ago Juanita moved to the Assisted Living at Northern Riverview where she lived until shortly before her death. Juanita’s sweet personality endeared her to residents and staff alike.

Juanita’s final weeks were spent at the amazing United Hospice of Rockland’s Joe Raso Hospice Residence which was truly a gift for which her family is most grateful. Juanita’s every moment there was filled with unconditional kindness, dignity and respect.

Juanita is survived by many members of the Carleo family, as well as Mary Anne Evangelist, her husband Bob Gundersen, and Mary Anne’s children Carianne and Jordan and his family.
