Obituary for John M. Aune

IN MEMORY OF JOHN MARTIN AUNE
September 11, 1945 - February 29th, 2024

Shortly after midnight on February 29th, 2024, John Aune died at Good Samaritan Hospital in Suffern, NY, surrounded by family. He was 78 years old.

John was born to Adeline and Arnt Aune in Bemidji, MN in 1945. His father was a B-17 navigator during World War II and later a math teacher and school administrator, and his mother was a first grade teacher in Elbow Lake, and later Thief River Falls, MN, where John grew up with his older brother, Michael, and younger brother, James. John was a three-letter athlete at Lincoln High school in Thief River Falls, where he graduated in 1963, and he attended Carleton College in Northfield, MN, graduating in 1967 with a BA in English. John received his master’s in teaching at Stanford University in 1970. He taught English at Tappan Zee High School in Orangeburg, NY, and Lawrence Woodmere Academy in Woodmere, NY, and then for thirty years at The Fieldston School, in Riverdale, NY.

John was much beloved by students, colleagues, and friends. He loved poetry, woodworking, breadmaking, baseball, bicycling, Seinfeld, Norwegian lefse, and his family.

He is survived by his brother Michael, wife Sondra, his children Stephanie, John Jr., Tyler, and Emily, and his grandchildren Louis, Jean-Bruce, Thomas, Arthur, Robin, Scarlett, Annabelle, and Miles.

A celebration of life is being planned for the Spring. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Foundation of America or other Alzheimer's research foundation of your choice.
