Dr. Arnold A. Amster PhD
Dr. Arnold A. Amster, born to Daniel and Rose Amster in Brooklyn, NY on November 18, 1939. He earned his Bachelors, Masters and PhD from New York University. He was a beloved teacher and mentor to students in Bed-Sty, Clarkstown Junior High, and served as Art Department Chairman at Clarkstown South High School until his retirement in 1996.
He was a longtime negotiator for the CTA and member and Chairman Of the Zoning Board of Appeals in Clarkstown from 1986 until 2007. Following his retirement from teaching, he worked with Volunteer Counseling as a mediator in the local courts and a Lemon Law Arbitrator.
A well respected artist in his own right, he shared his love of art and Art History with his students and fellow teachers for over 37 years. ”Doc” Amster was equally devoted in his advocacy for teachers and school personnel as well as in his role in local government, ensuring that all who appeared before him received a fair hearing.
He is survived and mourned by his wife of 48 years, Patricia (Gatti), his daughter Hollie and her husband Louis Sigillo; his son Joseph and his wife Joy Buckhout, and his daughter Ann. He was a beloved Poppy to Emily, Matthew, Johnny and Abby Sigillo and Emmelia Amster.
The family will receive callers and guests at the Hannemann Funeral Home, 88 South Broadway, Nyack, NY, on Tuesday, January 3, from 3 until 8pm. The funeral and burial will be private.
In lieu of flowers, anyone one wishes may make a donation to his favorite charity, People to People, West Nyack, NY.
