Superman

I could tell a number of stories about Joe being Superman. Stories from Tanglewood or stories from Montvale Lanes 10 pins bowling league or stories of his crazy generosity but I decided to write about him being Superman battling cancer. Joe let me go with him and Lydia to some of his chemo treatments. Joe hated needles but you would never know. Joe always had early appointments. He would be the first to arrive and would start everyones day with smiles and jokes. He knew everyones name. He would joke with them all. He made everyone who walked in the room laugh about something. Lydia and I had a great time teasing him for finally eating vegetables (Lydia got him to eat cucumbers).. Joe did not want to lose his hair. One day i get a text saying he had Vlad (his trusted barber)shave his head. Then i get a picture of his bald head with sunglasses. He joked about being Kojack and bought lollipops. He had his niece help him shave. one time. He let the individuals at Tanglewood rub his head and on Valentines Day he had all the girls of the house draw hearts on his head with lipstick. Joe rarely missed work through his treatments -though many days Irene, Lydia and I would try to keep him home or send him home. When he found out someone had cancer, he would become their biggest supporter. Joe truly was Superman during this difficult season. We learned from him, laughed with him, cried for him, but mostly admired his incredible strength. Superman!
