Louis Edgar Hartell, born October 11, 1927, passed away May 7t, 2022 in his home with family. He was 94 years old, a long-time resident of Nyack, New York and beloved husband, father, and Pop Pop. He is survived by his daughter Barbara, son Gary and daughter in law Ruth and son Glenn and partner Annie Foley. He is also predeceased by his daughter Bonnie Wanamaker in 2007, and wife Carol Hartell in 2020. He has 5 grandchildren Lauren Kelly, Matthew Cagliostro, Gary Hartell Jr., Taylor Hartell and Ryan Hartell. He has 3 great grandchildren, Thomas Kelly V, Nico Kelly, and Isla Hartell. He is also survived by a sister in law Marilyn Lucci, who lives in Pennsylvania.

Louis was born in Nyack, Rockland County. He attended Nyack Schools and served in the Marines in China during World War II. He married his wife Carol in 1950, and has been a resident of the Nyack community for over 90 years. He worked many jobs during his life, delivering coal and ice, driving a taxi and working at the Sanitary Diaper Service for years. He is best remembered for opening Hartell’s Grocery in Upper Nyack in 1974 with his wife Carol. He continued to work there until his late 80s. He also opened Hartell’s Wines and Liquors in the 1970s and it remains open still today.

Louis was a hard-working, stalwart member of his family and the greater Nyack community, who dedicated himself to those around him. He was a member of Chelsea Hook and Ladder, a member of the American Legion and Naurashank Grand Lodge No 0589, and always helped those in need in the community. He is well-remembered for his time at Hartell’s Deli, with long days that started with the griddle breakfast service, and ended after dinner.
His strength and ability to run 2 business 7 days a week well into his 80s was highly regarded by family and community.
He served as a model of strength and commitment for his children and grandchildren. We are immensely grateful to have had him as a guiding presence in our life for so many years.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network in honor of Bonnie Wanamaker, a cause very near and dear to the Hartell family.
